LYRIC THEATRE.
“THE DEEMSTER.” An interesting event in the picture world is the first screening in New Zealand of the super-film “The Deemster,” which takes place at the Lyric Theatre on Saturday next (August 3). Hall Caine’s great story deals with a Manx tragedy, revolving around the destinies of a Bishop’s son and the Deemster’s daughter. The author’s son, Derwent Hall Caine is seen in the picture adaptation of the role of Dan Mylrea, and opposite him plays the beautiful American actress, Marian Swayne. In costuming, in settings, and in characterisation the Manx life is claimed to be faithfully pictured. The exact places where the novelist located the various episodes of his moving story were visited, and the •incidents taken on the very ground are pictured with fine fidelity. The late Wilson Barrett played a dramatic version of “The Deemster” under the title of “Ben My Chree,” and made a great success in the part of Dan Mylrea. “The Deemster” is more than a picture. It is a proper play—five acts and 21 scenes, and the powerful incidents are told with dramatic intensity.
