Sir Agnes Rejoins Active Brigade— Keimua to be put into Work Again Shortly — Wairarapa Strongly Represented at Wellington Meeting— Local Candidates Nominated for Future Classic Events. MASTERTON, Saturday. The full sister to Hymestra and Torfreda, owned by Mr. A. McDonald, of Masterton, will race under the name of Hyades. Sir Agnes has been brought in again after a few months’ spell, and the Boris—Miss Foreshore gelding will be seen out at Trentham next month. Chimera has been on the easy list since the Wanganui meeting, and Mr. Vallance’s filly will not be asked to race again this season. T. Pritchard did not have anything engaged at Napier Park, but has Merrie Poto in the open sprint events at Hawke’s Bay. Mr. A. A. Narby, of Masterton, intends bringing Keimua (Charlemagne II. —Elaine) in next week, and will hack him about for a few weeks before putting him into work. Keimua unfortunately went wrong in the middle of the season, but is looking big and well again now. Galore is a noticeable absentee from the list of local horses nominated for the Wellington meeting. Mr. A. Cameron’s mare will probably be spelled until next season. The Masterton-trained horses engaged at the Hawke’s Bay meeting are: Black Lake. Torchy, Brown Joe, Hydrus, Wishful, Gladful, Multaine and Merrie Poto. With the exception of the last-named all are at present at Napier. Hydrus is engaged in three events on the first day at Hastings. J. T. Jamieson’s charge is nominated in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles, the Ladies’ Bracelet and the open event (the Heretaunga Handicap). The list of acceptances, which will be published Thursday morning, should reveal what course is to be taken with the son of Hymettus. Writing to his brother in Masterton from France, Gunner R. Cooper said he was still going strong after two years .service abroad. He said he had met many of the sporting lads. Gunner Cooper successfully raced Full Rate and Chillies in this district. Both the stallion Hymettus and
the brood mare Straga are doing well on their owner’s property at Bla.rlogie, Masterton. Straga has quite got over her rough passage from Hastings to Masterton, when she was knocked about -i good deal during the railway journey. Mr. Rupert Morrison owns the pair. The two-year-old Matatua has gone into C. Pritchard’s stable at Trentham to be prepared for the I’r’al Plate, to be run at the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting next month. He will probably return to Masterton after the fixture. In all there are 20 Wairarapa-train-ed horses nominated for the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting. All the leading stables are represented. Wishful won the first time out over hurdles for Mr. Kemball when he finished in front of a dozen others at Napier. This is the Masterton owner’s first success in a hurdle race. It is also the first winner trained by W. Hawthorne in hurdle events. It is pleasing to note that Mr. W. E. Bidwill still intends taking an interest in racing, although not on such a large scale as formerly. The black, light blue sleeves and salmon cap may not be carried in the near future, but the Rototawai sportsman has entered Duration (Provocation —Declination) for the C.J.C. Derby of 1919, and Quotation (Hallowmas —Culmination) for the Oaks at the same meeting. As Probation, Association and Consultation have all been disposed of, it is unlikely that the private track at Featherston will be used for training purposes for some time to come. Masterton owners are well represented in the classic events of the Canterbury Jockey Club. Mr. W. R. Kemball has Miss Gold (Lucullus Recoup), Miss Lass (Elysian —Kowerewere), Miss Love (General Latour —petit Tor), and Vasilkov ,Autumnus — Ukraine) engaged in the Welcome Stakes of 1918; also the above quartette in the New Zealand Derby of 1919; and Miss Gold, Miss Lass and Miss Love in the Oaks at the same meeting. Mr. A. McDonald has engaged Affectation (Kilbroney — Simper), Rose Wreath (Kilbroney — Christmas Rose), Hyades (Hymettus —Straga) and Murihiku (Sunny Lake —Arai-te-Uru) in the Welcome Stakes of 1918, and also in the Derby of the following year; Rose Wreath, Hya.des and Murihiku are also in the Oaks at the same meeting. Mr. A. Cameron has his chestnut gelding Wolthea (Wolawa — Dorothea) engaged in the Welcome Stakes next season and also in the New Zealand Derby of 1919.
