VOLUNTARY MOTOR CORPS.
MOTORS FOR RETURNED SOLDIERS. At a meeting of Wellington motor car owners, presided over by the Mayor, Mr. J. P. Luke, M.P., it was resolved to establish an organisation for the purpose of providing the means of conveyance of returned soldiers from the Wellington wharves and railway stations to their destinations in Wellington city and suburbs. Lieutenant-Colonel Roberts, representing the Defence Department, stated that the present system was far from satisfactory. Under the new arrangement it would be possible for motor car owners to leave their cars in one particular spot as part of the wharf will be cleared for this purpose. Owners who are willing to place their cars at the disposal of the soldiers, whose final port of disembarkation is Wellington, will be able to purchase a tin of benzine at the Defence Stores at cost price.
It was also resolved: “That the name shall be the Wellington Voluntary Motor Corps.” “That any motorist will be eligible for membership who agrees to be available for service for the purpose of providing means of conveyance of returned soldiers from the Wellington wharves and railway stations to their destinations in Wellington city and suburbs, at any time when called upon by the secretary. In the event of unforeseen circumstances preventing a member from performing a duty when called upon such member shall be responsible to arrange for another motorist to act for him.”
“That a register should be prepared allotting a number to each member and showing the business and private telephone numbers of members.”
Officers were elected as follow: — Chairman, the Mayor of Wellington; organiser, Captain W. Pryor; executive, the Mayor, Lieutenant-Colonel Roberts, Captain Pryor, Mr. L. R. Partridge and Mr. H. W. Lloyd; secretary, Mr. H. J. Stott.
