SOUTHERN STAGE NOTES.
(By
“Lorgnette.”)
WELLINGTON, April 15. The Royal Comic Opera Company concluded a most successful season last Saturday evening with the fifth performance of the new musical play “Katinka.” The latest offering is full of brisk dialogue and musical numbers, whilst the chorus, ballet and orchestra have full scope to show off their abilities.
The next big attraction at the Grand Opera House will be the Allan Wilkie Company, under the Fuller direction, which opens a seven nights’ season on Saturday evening, April 27, with the great military drama, “Seven Days’ Leave.” It is from the pen of the well-known English dramatist, Walter Howard, and it is confidently stated that his two latest productions have been his biggest money-winners, viz., “Seven Days’ Leave” and “The Story of the Rosary.” Miss Ada Reeve’s Wellington season will extend over six nights, from May 28 to June 3, but it is probable that the season may open on May 18. Mr. John Hopkins, the well - known theatrical manager, has accepted a position on the managerial staff of Branscombes, Limited (“Dandies”), and is at present located at Melbourne. It is not quite certain yet, but the probability is that the clever American actress, Miss Kathlene McDonell, will play a farewell season of New Zealand, opening in Wellington on August 19. Mr. Allan Wilkie and his dramatic company will, after the Wellington season, play Christchurch from May 13 to 21, and Dunedin from May 23 to 27.
