NOTES.

The weather has been all against track work since the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting, the track proper being unsuitable. All the work was done on the centre. About 90 horses are at present working on the course, all looking in capital condition. The visiting horses are responsible for putting a lot of interest into the track work. M. Edwards had his team of six horses jogging in the centre, looking none the worse for their efforts at the A.T.C. meeting. A. Brown’s team, consisting of the three useful pacers Harold Junior, Quadroon and Shanghai, ran consistently last Saturday, registering two seconds and three thirds. On Tuesday morning most of the trainers were waiting till the afternoon, when the track would be dry after being harrowed. Despite the heavy going, W. G. Abbott drove Tim Doolan and had Strategy in the saddle. The pair went about a mile and a-half at three-quarter pace. False Alarm, looking a picture, was ridden by a young lady round the track. The erratic Belgian Queen was galloped in the centre at top. The mare will probably be relegated to the stud at the conclusion of the Otahuhu meeting. Mr. Jack Teddy left for home after the conclusion of the A.T.C. meeting, leaving Rotomanuka in George Malcolm’s care. The “heads” at Epsom favour the chances of Huon Grattan and Salamander in their respective races next Sat-

urday, each being considered well handicapped. Geo. Paul has Miss Salisbury looking in good fettle. The mare has received her full deserts in the Alexandra Handicap. Witch Hazel put in a lot of useful jogging work on Monday and Tuesday, moving attractively. The veteran T. W. Price has Hint, who did not start at the A.T.C. meeting, looking at his best. Prince Rufus, who was reported broken down, worked in the centre on Monday and Tuesday. The ground favoured the dicky legged one. Normintson, now that the ground is on the soft side, may be given a chance to earn some winter oats, being on the limit in the President’s Handicap. Maethorn (limit) and Mutu (12yds behind) look a likely pair in the Trial Handicap. Both horses are very well. Molly Royal will probably make her initial attempt to capture a race. She is on the 12 yards mark in the April Handicap. If Sweet Memory could be induced to settle down she would keep the rest busy in the Alexandra Handicap from the 12 yards mark. Mr. F. W. Edwards has made some good handicaps. No dissentient voices have been heard since the production of the handicaps. Phil Green (writes our Wanganui correspondent) has his two trotters, The Weaver and Inora, engaged at the Manawatu trotting meeting. They have both been doing good work on the track, and as they are nicely handicapped should perform well. The Weaver’s track work has been particularly good, and if he can only be induced to trot up to his best form he will be very hard to beat. Inora has also been moving very freely, and she ought to do well in her engagements.
