OHINEMURI JOCKEY CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING

CUP WON BY REBEL.

The Ohinemuri meeting held on Saturday was the last of the country circuit so far as Auckland is concerned, and was successfully got through with, the eight races being run off between 11.15 a.m. and 4 pm. as nearly as it was possible to keep to the time-table, the races being so arranged as to permit of the crowd getting away by the train for Hamilton Junction and settlements en route, thereby giving those who travelled by rail an opportunity of get-

ting back to Auckland early on Sunday morning. The steamer arrangements direct from Paeroa were made to fit in nicely also, and the express from Auckland to the Thames picked up those returning in that direction. There was a large crowd, and the weather was for once in a way all that could be desired. The fields were excellent all round —abnormally large in some of the events. Mr. J. Vincent,, who acted as deputy-starter for Mr. C. O’Connor, who was engaged elsewhere, got through his task very well, and the management of the secretary (Mr. H. Poland) and his staff left nothing wanting, though ambulance arrangements were lacking. Fortunately accidents were few. One, however, was serious, resulting in a broken collarbone for R. Tapp, who came down with Plenipotent in the hurdle race. At the totalisators there was big business as usual, and the sum of £24,511 was handled, compared with £39,081 for both days last year.

There were eight runners for the Handicap Hurdles, and the Spalpeen mare Ditto, carrying top weight, proved too good for the opposition, showing that the support she received was fully justified. Yankee Doodle, Carbiness and Welshman finished next in order. Plenipotent fell. ■ There were twenty-four starters for the Maiden Handicap, and Miss Leslie, the topweight, was made favourite. The winner turned up in the Hymettus three-year-old gelding Revenue, who has several times been placed or prominent during the season previously. The aged Soult horse Cordite was second, after showing out in front, and he and the winner paid fine prices. Lady Lyddite’s number was hoisted as third, but it is understood that this was afterwards altered and General Stephen’s number substituted. It was a close thing between the pair for third place. After passing the post Cordite crossed his legs and fell. There were nine in the Netherton We’ter Handicap, and Loyal Arch was backed down to a short price and was ridden by J. O’Shea, who was fined £lO for not carrying out a promise to ride British Arch. The favourite won comfortably, the consistent Blue Cross, ridden by M. D O’Shea, being second and Pendoon third. Kauri King was amongst the “also started” division and was set too stiff a task. There were fourteen competitors for the Karangahake Handicap, Hymeona being the most fancied. Arran, whose racing at Te Aroha sharpened him up, beat the three-year-old in good style and paid a useful dividend, while Ring Lupin ran a good race, as he invariably does over five fur’ongs, and finished third, but he was giving lots of weight away to the pair that led him home, which rather discounts their form.

Recent form pointed to Rebel having a good chance of winning the Ohinemuri Cup, and he was backed very solidly as was Fionnuala. Mr. Hannon’s gelding, served by weight, beat all those above him handsomely and also accounted for Waiuta. who ran a good race, as she almost invariably does, finishing second, with Uncle Ned, who has not run a bad race this season, third. Royal Irish again beat Demotic, as in the Te Aroha Cup, but Fionnuala and Mullingar did not run up to their best. Sixteen lined up for the Komata Hack Handicap, an outsider in Persian Prince, trained by his owner, who bought him very cheaply some time back, winning from Revenue, who was saddled up for the second time, Moneymoon being third and Declare fourth. Persian Prince is a five-year-old son of Persian King, and was in receipt of 271 b. from a three-year-old like Miss Leslie, and there was nothing startling about the win save the price he paid, though he did his work well.

The Paeroa Steeplechase went to GLuterino, a son of Gluten and Carreno, who was over the course last year. He has previously shown some dash over fences, and he beat the thirteen-year-old Golden Glow, Hautere and Glenhow in handy fashion, and paid a nice price. Captain Lock was well backed, but he fell over Speedwell Mac, the favourite, early in the race. John Bunny ran disappointingly, but got the course. He will want lots of time to furnish and something easy before he wins. Rekanui was favourite for the St. Patrick’s Handicap, with Loyal Arch a 1 so well supported. The last-named made matters pretty merry and was only cut down in the run home by Mossman, form again working out as at Te Aroha. Lightning was third and Rekanui fourth. The meeting was thus brought to a close. The results were: —
