A PORTION OF THE FLANDERS BATTLEFIELD, WHICH DURING 1917 WAS THE SCENE OF THE MOST TERRIBLE CONFLICT IN THE WORLD’S HISTORY. THE PHOTOGRAPH WAS TAKEN AFTER HEAVY RAIN HAD BEEN EXPERIENCED ON THE WESTERN FRONT, AND THE WRECKAGE STREWN ABOUT EVERYWHERE ON THE SHELL-PLOUGHED LAND GIVES AN INDICATION OF THE DAMAGING EFFECTS OF THE INTENSE ARTILLERY BOMBARDMENT WHICH EXTENDED OVER MANY MONTHS. As will be noted, the French Engineers have constructed a temporary bridge of duckboards across a stream to allow of transit between the lines.
FRENCH RED CROSS MEN BREAKFASTING AT A FARM-HOUSE IN FLANDERS. THE BUILDING, WHICH IS SITUATED AMID CHARMING SURROUNDINGS, BEARS EVIDENCE OF THE RAVAGES OF WAR, AND SINCE THE FRENCH RECAPTURED IT FROM THE ENEMY HAS DONE ADMIRABLE SERVICE AS A DRESSING STATION. Note the reflection on the waiter, which resembles a mirror in clearness. By reversing the picture an interesting result is obtained.
