RACING TOPICS.
Mr. James Bull, of Hunterville, has got hold of a useful four-year-old gelding in All Over, by his sire All Red. He literally got all over the opposition in the Waitoa Hack Handicap at Wanganui, but was lucky to beat the topweight, Henry Clay. All Over would, however, be none the worse for his experience, and both he and Elevate, who ran second, were handled by apprentices.
Just as the first month of a foal’s life is the critical stage of his career, says an exchange, when he may be made or marred, so the first seasons of a stallion’s stud life are very often the main factors in establishing him as a much-sought-after success. Failure to sire anything of note in his first two seasons has often taken away opportunities from a stallion that may have landed him. high among horses, and, on the other hand, we have seen stallions succeeding in the face of limited chances, and have done big things when their worth was properly appreciated. How true.
At a meeting of the Syndicate of French Breeders for sale of thorough-
breds, held in Paris in November, it was resolved to ask for the re-stab-lishment of racing in France on prewar lines, with the public admitted on payment, and the Pari-Mutuel reinstated. However, racing operations are not to be extended in France this year, as the military authorities have taken over the racecourses at Auteuil and Longchamp, so that of the big tracks only Chantilly and Maisons Lafitte will be available.
