MARTON JOCKEY CLUB.
SPRING MEETING.
MULTICIPAL WINS CUP
The Marton Jockey Club’s spring meeting was held on the club’s course at Marton on New Year’s Day in showery weather, but the umavouiable chmat c conditions did not peter racegoers from assembling in strong force, the attendance reaching record d mensions. Though the 'fields were reduced considerably as the result or late scratchings, they were sufficiently strong to ensure some keen contests, the Juvenile Handicap in particular providing a stirr ng finish, wh le the race for the Marton Cup created great interest, Multicipal s victory being exceedingly popular. The management of the meeting was all that could be des red, the secretary, Mr. Arthur Way, attending to every detail with his usual foresight and integrity. . Brisk bus ness was experienced on the totalisator, the investments amount ng to £33,394, as against £23,302 for the first day of the 191 b gathering, when £41,045 was handled for the two days.
The afternoon’s programme commenced with the runnng of the Hack Hurdles, for which Mattock was the heaviest backed candidate, others to receive solid support being Want, Calais and Portland Lady. From a good start Mahzoltov took command, with Gala s as his nearest attendant, the latter being in charge as they passed the stand, with Mahzoltov, Portland Lady and Lady Amai at the head of the others. Portland Lady moved up going along the back, and was handy to Cala s entering the straight, with Miss Sation and Lady Amai next. The Porirua mare was / going nicely, and once m the straight had Calais’ measure, and sustaining her run in resolute fashion she crossed the winn ng mark a eouple of lengths in- advance of the Patronus gelding. A good race ensued between Miss Sation and Amai for third honours, the former just beating her r.val.
Consequent upon her double win at the Manawatu meeting, Mr. E. Short’s speedy mare Hupana was installed a hot favourite for the Dash Hack Handicap, in which there were nine starters, of whom Warmaid, Vlad eau and ’Cello were the next best fancied. The favourite quickly found her way to the front when the barrier lifted, and with ’Cello and Zela n close attendance led until the approach to the straight, where ’Cello took command and was first to turn for home. A splendid race up the straight was witnessed, Vladineau putting in her clam, while the favourite still appeared to hold a winning chance. ’Cello, however, carried too many guns for his opponents, and when asked for a final effort by G. Young responded in tradesmanlike style, gaining a three lengths’ victory from Vlad neau, with Hupana a length away, third, and Wanna’d fourth. Notwithstanding her failure to run into a place in her engagement at Awapuni on Boxing Day, when it was generally conceded her prospects were spo It as a result of her bolting a mile and a-half prior to starting in the event in quest'on, Torfreda was made the medium of heavy speculation in the Juvenile Handicap, carrying considerably more coin than Coolpan, Staccato and Tit Willow in a field of eight starters. From an even despatch Coolpan took the lead from Staccato, Torfreda and Demos, the last-named making up his leeway quickly. Once in the straight, Demos forged to the front, and finishing in attractive fashion outpaced Coolpan and secured the judge’s verdict by a length and a-half. Torfreda was half a length away third, and Oratress fourth. . The withdrawals of Client, Rangitero, Impediment, Dribble, Nobleman, Centre, Potentiality and Mascot reduced the field for the Marton Cup to half a dozen contestants, Multicipal being elected favourite, with Rude, Sleight of Hand, Square Deal, Gold Soult and Namur supported in the order named. Namur piloted the field in the early stages, being several lengths in front of Sle’ght of Hand and Square Deal passing the stand. Going along the back Sleight of Hand took charge, Namur dropping back, while Mult’cipal, who had been tailing the field, improved his position. The latter ran up to the leaders in the run to the bend for home, and as the field straightened up for the run to the post a sterling race was promised, Rude, and Gold Soult throw-
ing out strong challenges. A keen contest saw Multicipal, who was capably handled by H. Young, win an excit ng lace by a length from Rude, wth Gold Soult a similar distance away, third. Colorado, winner of the two hurdle races at the Manawatu meeting the previous week, was installed a pronounced favour te for the Ladies’ Bracelet, in which he had a 12.12 burden to carry, while Blue Thread, Sir F sher and Engari were all accorded a wide measure of support. Sir Fisher went to the front early, w th General Madero and the favourite both handy, the trio showing the way into the straight. Sir F.sher was full of running, and had no difficulty in holding his opponents safe when the final test commenced, winning comfortably by three lengths from Colorado, with Engari a length away, th'rd.
The defections of Nystad, Rantitero, Lady General, Turangapito, Starengo, Bagdad and Hupana left half a dozen compet tors in the Railway Handicap, Moutoa Queen, fresh from her victory at Awapuni the previous Thursday, being preferred to Waimatao, with Sweet Tipperary best backed of the others. Interlude was responsible for the pace in rhe early stages, w’th Waimatao in close attendance, the latter soon having the Bezonian mare’s measure, while Moutoa Queen jo ned in the issue, a good race to the judge’s box resulting in a victory for Waimatao by a couple of lengths from the favourite, with Glorify a length and a-half away, third. Signorella was made a solid favour'te for the New Year Hardieap,
with Hastie and Quinn’s Post in most demand of the other five starters. Hast'e led Bay Berry and Signorella over the first half-mile, and was first to enter the straight. Signorella then put in his claim, and smothering his opponents for pace placed the issue beyond doubt by prevaiPng by fully four lengths from Quinn’s Post, with Hastie, who tired in the stra’ght, a couple of lengths away, third. The concluding event, the Stewards’ Welter, attracted a field of seven, including Colorado and Combustion, who were both making their second appearance during the afternoon. Black Ada was selected as the most likely to score, wh’le Zola and Arrowfield were each entrusted with substantial support. The favourite began smartly, and though both Zola and Fore made efforts to pace it with her their prospeots were only of a hopeful nature tempo: arily, for once the straight was eidered the daughter of \AII Black won with something to spare by a long neck from Colorado, who returned his supporters a good dividend. Arrowfield was fourth. The results were: — HACK HURDLES of 175sovs. One mile and a-half. 4—J. H. Prosser’s ch m Portland Lady, by Achilles — Portland Lass, aged, 11.9 (Burt) 1 3 — M.
