Wellwood in Work Again—Gloaming Displays Great Turn of Speed— Killalla Shows up Attractively at Kurow — Five New Zealand Cup Horses Start in Kurow Cup—Killard Impresses Racegoers—Mr. R. Acton Adams’ Representatives for Dunedin Meeting. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Wellwood, who raced very consistently at the Grand National meeting, is in steady work again at Riccarton, and may be seen out in the crosscountry events at the Gore meeting. F. D. Jones has just taken up a couple of very promising geldings bred by the late Hon. J. D. Ormond. One is by Birkenhead from Agony, and the other by Hymettus from the Birkenhead mare Parula. During the past week a number of two-year-olds have been exercised at the barrier. One of the most promising of their number is Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s colt Gloaming, who is receiving his education at the hands of Percy Mason. This Australian-bred son of The Welkin can muster up a great turn of speed, and should give a good account of himself in the D.J.C. McLean Stakes on Friday and in the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes.

Marc Antony is standing up to his tasks all right so far, but it is by no means certain that he will see the post for the New Zealand Cup. '

Snub and Wardancer are both going on the right way in their Cup preparations and the pair may be given a race to sharpen them up at the Rangiora meeting on the 22nd inst.

All Mr. G. L. Stead’s horses have been withdrawn from their classic engagements at the C.J.C. meeting. Mr. Stead is- now in Sydney and intends remaining in Australia to see his representatives run at the V.A.T.C. and V.R.C. meetings. Easily the most promising juvenile that sported silk at the Kurow meeting was Mr. C. W. Reid’s filly Killalla. The two-year-old daughter of Kilbroney and Arai-te-Uru was making her first public appearance in the Trial Plate, which she won in trades-man-like style from another smart galloper in Lady Superior. Killalla, who is trained at Riccarton by F. D. Jones, claims an engagement in the D.J.C. McLean Stakes and C.J.C. Welcome Stakes, and she gives promise of playing an important part in the decision of both races.

There were five New Zealand Cup candidates seen out in the chief event of the Kurow meeting. Varnish registered a greatly improved performance, for he won handsomely after coming at the right end. Though there was nothing great about his achievement it shows that the son of Varco is on the improve, and such a fine stayer may have to be taken into account in Cup considerations. John Barleycorn and Rorke’s Drift were both backward to have much chance in the Kurow Handicap, but the race is bound to do them good. The former did fairly well in finishing up just behind the placed horses, and he is likely to come on a lot in the next few weeks. Rorke’s Drift’s display was disappointing in the extreme, as he could not muster up enough pace to get near the leading division at any part of the race. Rose Pink was prominent in the early stages, but faded out so badly as to suggest that she will be quite out of place in a Cup field. Thaddeus collided with Zuland just after the start, the mishap effectually settling the chance of both horses, while Tip Up. the favourite, got caught in the barrier, taking practically no part in the race.

Amongst the winners at the Kurow meeting was Killard, who will carry Mr. J. B. Reid’s colours in the New Zealand Cup. The son of Kilbroney and Siberia has come on a lot since last season, and with only 6.7 in the saddle may have outside prospects in the big event. The English-bre d sire Kilbroney had three winning representatives at the Kurow meeting in Killalla, Kilrea and Killard. The first-named nair are both out of Arai-te-Uru.

Rajput, Stirrup Cup and Lisp, who will represent Mr. R. Acton Adams at the Dunedin meeting, passed through Christchurch a few days ago on their way to Dunedin, where they claim engagements. As the result of their wins at Kurow the following horses will have to carry penalties in their Dunedin engagements: Jeannot 111 b in the Hurdles, Killard 111 b in the Maungatua Handicap, Helicon 81b in the Taroma Handicap and Killard 31b in the Mosgiel Handicap.
