RACING REVIEWED.

DANNEVIRKE RACING CLUB.

SPRING MEETING.

DETROIT WINS OTANGA HANDICAP.

The Dannevirke Racing Club held their spring meeting on Wednesday under very unfavourable weather conditions. There was a large attendance of sportsmen, including vis - tors from Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki and Wellington. The total sator receipts amounted to £15,037, as against £12,663, an increase of £2374. Mr. R. Takle, the secretary, was indefatigable in his efforts to ensure the success of the afternoon’s racing, and was ably assisted by other officials of the club.

The racing was interesting in the flat events, and large fields and close finishes were the order of the day. In the leaping events, however, the jumping was very bad, and in the hurdle race nine horses fell.

Proceedings opened with the Trial Stakes, in which sixteen maidens faced the starter. Mr. H. E. Troutbeck’s Cyntheria, an importation from Australia, by Wallace —Ceria, made her debut, and managed to lead the field until the straight was reached, when Polynesian, Signorella, Arihia and Kahumanga joined her, and Polynesian, coming on nicely, reached the winning post a length and a-half to the good of Kahumanga, who was a length in front of Signorella, with Arihia close up, fourth.

In the Jumpers’ Flat, Sleight of Hand made his re-appearance after his National Hurdles victory, and holding the field at any part won with something in hand from Tati mi by two lengths, the last-named being half a length in front of Gold Fran. The Spr.ng Handicap brought out the good field of seventeen, and it was a splendid race to the post, several horses having winning chances until the last twenty yards. Gold Painting, on the inside, was the first to break the line from a beautiful start. After a furlong had been covered Interlude and Hushabye took the lead, with Trials at the head of the others. Two furlongs from home Bairnsdale and Dr.bble joined Trials just behind the leaders. Once heads, were in- a line for home the field closed on the leading pair, and Bairnsdale, Trials, Rose Pink, Dribble, Vagabond and Hushabye were almost m line. An exciting race ensued, and when the post was reached Vagabond was a half-head to the good of Bairnsdale, w.th Dribble a head away, and the others bunched just behind. The Umutaoroa Hack saw a field of fifteen face the starter, and King’s Armour was soon in front, and bowlIng along nicely won by a length and a-ha.f from Nobleman, who had a bad passage. Try Again was tfii r£ L with Queen Lizzie close up, fourth. The Handicap Hurdles brought out fifteen horses, but not all hurdlers, nine coming to grief. Four fell at the first fence, three at the second, two at the third, leaving six horses to complete the course at various m-

tervals. Colorado was first home,, followed by Jem, with Yarilla in third position. The Steeplechase attracted six runners, but trouble started early, Torchy getting in too close at the first fence and falling. At the next obstacle Sabrenui ran off, while in negotiating the double Pawerewere toppled over, leaving Merry Jack in front, with Coalition and Kurapai a long way back. The trio jumped the remaining fences safely, and in an> interesting finish Merry Jack won by three lengths from Kurapai, with Coalition a length further away, third. The Otanga Handicap provided a sterling race. Croesus was. soon in front, followed by Botanist, Cleft and Maid o’ Gowrie. This order was maintained to the bend out of the straight, where some bumping took place, Maid o’ Gowrie and Cleft dropping back. From this out there was little change in the order until entering the straight, where Chuckle and Detroit could be seen going up fast. At the distance Croesus cried enough, while Chuckle, Detroit and Undecided joined Botanist in the front. In a good finish Detroit won by threequarters of a length from Chuckle, with Botanist half a length away, third. Undecided was fourth. The Hack Welter Handicap was run in semi-darkness and during a heavy shower. From a good start Hastie was quickly in front, and when the field had settled down still had command', with All Talk, Rio and Maraetotara as his nearest opponents. There was little change in the order when they reached the straight. Here Alteration put in his claim, but faded out at the distance, while Rio, Hastie, All Talk and Maraetotara

cleared out from the others, a splend d finish seeing Rio prevail by half a length from Hastie, who was the same distance ahead of All Talk. Maraetotara was a head away, fourth, while Alteration was the next to finish. The results were: — TRIAD STAKES of 75sovs. Five furlongs and a-half. Weight, 8.7. 2 — Geo.
