MUSIC NOTES.

(By

“G” String.)

Sir Thomas Beecham opened a season of grand Opera in England at the Drury Lane Theatre, London, on May 30. The attractions for the first week of the season were Verdi’s “Otello,” Puccini’s “The Girl of the Golden West,” and “Madame Butterfly,” Charpentier’s “Louse,” and Moussorgsky’s “Boris Godounor.” The company which Sir Thomas Beecham selected for the season is sa’d to be a very fine one, the team work of the singers and orchestra being exceedingly well balanced. Madame Elsa Stralia, the South Australian vocalist, was at latest advices in London. Since she left Australia, in 1911, she has played a season in grand opera at Covent Garden, and has also established a reputation as a concert singer. Her own name is Elsa Fischer. Miss Alice Hollander, the Sydney contralto, was recently scoring big at ■one of London’s leading music halls with her singing of “I Want You to Know That I Miss You.” Madame Evelyn Scotney, the brilliant Australian soprano, and Mr. Howard White, the great American basso, scored such a success in Melbourne that they had to give several extra concerts. After seasons in Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and several of the principal towns in the Commonwealth, this talented couple will visit New Zealand. The tour is under the management of Messrs. J. and N. Tait.
