WANGANUI.

Interlude to be Given Spell—A. Hall’s Team for Wellington Meeting— Bivouac Changes Hands —C. Gordon’s Pair of ’Chasers.

WANGANUI, Monday

T. Long does not intend to race Interlude again until the spring. She has shown consistently good form on the tracks right through the season, but on several occasions in her later engagements, though she ran well, she just failed to pay a dividend. She ought to be seen at her best next season, when she might win a good race or two. By the way, her owner, Mr. H. M. Speed, who has been at the front, where he was wounded a couple of times, and finally declared unfit for further service, may be back in New Zealand before long. Alex. Hall contemplates taking a team to Wellington for the winter meeting, and is putting some solid work into Moulu, Postillion and Turangapito with that object in view. Postillion has now had a lot of schooling over the little sticks, and as a result he is now jumping more carefully than formerly, though lie would still go at the obstacles at a terrific pace if not steadied. What times he has struck hard and stumbled he has always shown remarkable cleverness in keeping on his feet. Moulu has proved himself a good jumper, and he ought to win a race over the hurdles, though not perhaps in the top class.

Marton has evidently regained a lot of his old form, and judging by his performance in running second to Braeburn in the Napier Steeplechase the old fellow should pick up a good race or two before finally retired. He has 10.7 in the Hawke’s Bay Steeples, and should be handy at the finish.

Leonta ran a good race in the big hurdles at Napier Park on Friday, when he finished second to Master Timi. The Conqueror gelding might turn the tables on Master Timi in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles, as the distance (2*4 miles) will suit him, as he is such a great stayer. It is generally expected that the Foxton Racing Club will make a big 'fight against losing one day’s racing. It is contended by supporters of that club that it is more entitled to two days’ racing than Rangitikei, and a lively discussion is anticipated before the matter is finally settled. The Wanganui Trotting Club has been deprived of one day’s racing, which is rather to be regretted, seeing that the club’s meetings have become so popular, and the sport was just getting a firm hold on this coast. However, a reduction had to be made, and we can only hope that it will be limited to one season only

A Wanganui sportsman has purchased Bivouac from Mr. B. T. Bennett, the price paid for the Campfire gelding being £lOO. Bivouac is very speedy for about five furlongs, but will in future have to race in open company, in which he may prove equal to winning some races. He is said to be able to jump, and may be put to the hurdling game. C. Gordon took Record and Grey Guard to the Napier Park meeting, but neither gelding did any good. Record was expected to show up well in the big event, but spoilt whatever chance he had by falling. He might do better in the Hawke’s Bay Steeples, in which he has 10.7. Lady Middleton was doing such good work before leaving here that many looked to her to win a race at the Park, but she was unplaced. She will be a starter in the Heretaunga Handicap at the Hawke’s Bay meeting, and may shape better.
