WINTER MEETING. GANG AWA’ WINS CUP. The Otaki Maori Racing Club opened their winter meeting on Monday (June 4 in pleasant weather, a large crowd being present, many from long distances, to witness the excellent afternoon’s sport provided. The RailwayDepartment’s policy of cutting out all race trains and running the ordinary trains past Otaki came in for strong condemnation from sportsmen generally. and the matter should receive th., immediate attention of Parliament when the new session commences. With tne exception of the Steeplechase, the racing was of a high order, and in tne circumstances the success achieved by the club must be gratifying to members. During the afternoon the sum of £19,567 was handled on the totalizator. as against £20,486 for the opening dav of the 1916 winter gathering, a decrease of £919.
