WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB.

WINTER MEETING. The Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meetings are amongst the oldestestablished in the Dominion; indeed, the late Queen Victoria’s birthday has been celebrated in the district with events in which steeplechasing has been a feature for about fortyfive years, and winter meetings have been held on the Wanganui course covering the whole period, with only a change of venue to the old Aramoho course on one or two occasions in the ’seventies. The meeting to be held there on May 24 and 26, and which opens at 11.45 a.m.—lhe starting time fixed for the first race each day—is creating a great deal of interest, and there is the promise of good fields for the handicap events, which are published below, and for which the acceptances go in on Monday next; —

Mr. S. P. Mackay was the purchaser of the English-bred mare Lady Victoria for 1900 guineas at the McArthur sale in Melbourne last month. «•♦ ♦ • The aged New Zealand gelding Rongopai, by Conqueror — Punawai, broke his neck whilst competing in a hurdle race at the City Tattersail’s Club meeting recently held at Randwick. There were only five runners, but the race was responsible for two accidents and the death of Rongopai. The New Zealand hurdler struck the second fence heavily and broke his neck. Death was instantaneous, and the crowd dragged the carcase off the course to leave it clear for the second round of the race. When the other four runners came to the same fence, the two leaders galloped through the opening—the hurdle being knocked down — but St. Medoc struck the battens with his hind legs and his rider was thrown. Clifton, the rider of Rongopai, and Kain, St. Medoc’s pilot, both sustained slight concussion of the brain, while Clifton’s shoulder was badly bruised.
