ELLERSLIE ITEMS.

TUESDAY. This morning most of the work was of tlie medium pace order. The sand, outer grass and tan tracks were available. Hopfield, the local favourite for the Easter Handicap, put in easy pace work on the sand. This gelding looks bright and well. Hiero and Colonel Soult sprinted four furlongs on the tan in 51 2-ssec, with heads together Lady Bruce put in easy pace work on the two-year-old rink and looks none the worse for the enforced rest. Most of F. Macmanemin’s team were on the easy list, but Tabasco and Fisher put in a solid tan circuit, finishing together in Imin 52sec. Fabrquette and Arran put a tan circuit past, not looking for time, while Bowler and another sprinted six furlongs on the grass in Imin 18sec, the former leading. Rosori alone skipped over a tan five furlongs in Imin Ssec. Prince Merriwee anxious to extend h’mself, put in strong work alone. Marble Star, Lady Glen, Jack Delaval and General Joffre did strong work. Tact alone worked at three-quarter pace. Tragedy King put in his usual tan circuits with a light boy in the saddle. Loyal Arch and Flower Gold ran along for a few furlongs separately at a good pace. Opposition and Harlestone sprinted four of five furlongs on the grass in 52 l-ssec. C. Coleman’s team, Marconi, Dancas-

tor, Empire and Spalspire worked usefully, not being up against the watch. Alf. Delaval, alone, from a semistanding start, ran six furlongs on the grass in Imin 20sec. The gelding is well. Tararu Jack put in three easy rounds of the tan. He looks big and lusty again after his spell. After breakfast El Gallo and Ulster nut in some useful work on the tan. They both look in forward condition. Cardrona was working on the tan, and looks all the better for the racing he has had in Hawke’s Bay. The three two-year-olds, Demotic. Bingham and Woody Glen, sprinted half a mile on the grass, finishing with heads together. Pearl d’Mont sprinted a few furlongs alone, but did not respond to the calls made on him for pace. Bluestone, Bellacity, Lady Penury and Guiding Way worked separately at half pace. The maiden hurdler Joss jumped the pony hurdles, cutting out the first jump. He was also schooled last week. L. H. Hewitt was present and rode

Merry Roe in her work on the tan. The same . horseman has been engaged to pilot Cardrona on the opening day of the A.R.C. autumn meeting. The chestnut Step, in J. Chaafe’s stable, ran half a mile in company with Royal Prince. The ex-Hawke’s Bay gelding had the best of the flutter. Scottish Knight was putting in some light tasks in company with a stable mate. The Robert the Bruce youngster looks well. The maiden hurdler Te Whetumarama is back again putting in useful toil and has quite recovered from the clouts he got while schooling some time back.

Jocular, Monathol, Waimai, Bleriot, Plenipotent and others put in useful work.

Jocular is in work again under PT. French’s guidance. Royal Prince is doing nicely under J. Chaafe’s care. Lady Glen was sore last week and was in consequence not taken to the Ohinemuri meeting. She appears to have got over her trouble again. C Coleman is now in his new quarters at Ellerslie with his useful team. Plorses trained at headquarters did very well at the Ohinemuri meeting on both days. J. Conquest, with four winning rides on the second day and two on the first at Ohinemuri. had quite a successful meeting there. Trainer Sharp’s successes with Mr. Raven’s pair of Spalpeen mares. Fionnuala and Glendalough, were deserved, for he has them well. Ring Lupin’s 'double success at the Paeroa meeting would be some compensation for recent disappointments to iiis owner and trainer.

TROTTING STUD BOOK. (To the Editor.) Dear Sir, —May I trespass on your space to bring before the notice of light harness horse breeders the fact that Volume V. of the New Zealand Trotting Stud Book is in course of preparation. There are many owners in the Auckland district who have not yet realised the importance of having the'r brood mares and progeny included in this valuable record. No charge is made, and the benefit arising to owners will always be great in the years to come, making the work valuable also. I shall be very pleased to receive particulars of all additional foalings of mares entered in Volume IV. and also of brood mares that do not figure in that issue. Entry forms and any

information will be willingly supplied by the compiler. F. C. THOMAS, “Sun” Office, Christchurch.
