TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING.

TOA TERE WINS THE CUP.

(From Our Travelling Reporter.)

The autumn meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club was opened on Wednesday in the presence of <a large attendance, visitor? being present from all. parts of New Zealafid, while some interesting racing was witnessed. The various events were keenly fought out, and the judge, Mr W. H. 'Hartgill, had some close finishes to decide, the result in many instances bearing a tribute to the handicapper, Mr. Geo. Morse, whose work came in for very favourable criticism in consequence of several splendid finishes. The win of Toa Tere in the Cup was very well received, the horse’s owner, Mr. James Hawkins, being a very' popular New Plymouth ident.ty. This was the first occasion that Toa Tere had sported silk in the Dominion since returning from Australia, where the gelding notched a number of successes. At the conclusion of the race the Cup was presented to Mr. Hawkins by Mrs. O. Samuels, wife of the club’s president, amidst the applause of the crowd, while the band played appropriate airs. The club’s caretaker, Mr. Blewman, had the racecourse and appointments in capital order, and he was naturally complimented on the picturesque manner in which everything appeared. Mr. E. P. Webster had charge of the secretarial department, and in the hands of this capable official everything passed off very pleasingly.. The Citizens’ Band, under Mr. F. W. G‘. McLeod (bandmaster), discoursed a capital musical programme, which was very keenly appreciated. The totalisator staff were kept busy, £20,432 10s. finding its way through the machine, compared with £17,534 for the corresponding day last year. The race for the Cup provided a stirring contest. From an excellent start, Depredation and Paraoa took the lead, showing the way past the stand from a bunched field. Going round the back, Toa Tere moved up into third place, while Analogue could be seen creeping up. At the fiend Depredation was still in front, with Toa Tere handy. Coming into the straight Depredation fell back, while Toa Tere took the lead, and galloping resolutely for the rest of the journey the gelding won by a length from Analogue, with Lidy Penury, who came well over the latter portion, a similar distance away, third. Master Lupin was fourth, Depredation fifth, and Waiuta last.

The meeting must be voted very successful and enjoyable; in fact, it constituted in every respect one of the best ever held by the club. The presence of several Auckland owned horses added considerable interest, and the fact of some of them getting amongst the winners added much to the enjoyment of the gathering. Mr. C. O’Connor was in fine form at the barrier, his sends-off being a theme for admiration for all concerned, while Mr. Hartgill’s decisions were hoisted promi tly and correctly.
