AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB.

CHID WINS GREAT NORTHERN DERBY. ADELAIDE DIRECT NOW THE QUEEN. ESTABLISHES AN AUSTRALASIAN RECORD. The opening of the Auckland Trotting Ciub’s summer meeting, interrupted by rain, was concluded on Thursday afternoon. Proceedings opened with the Eden Handicap Trot, for which Paul Huon was made favourite, and, capably handled by J. Bryce, cut down the leaders and won by forty yards from Hova, w th Kirikiriroa third, but had Macwood not broken he would have been second. Rio Grande picked up a piece of wire in his shoe, and this caused him not to leave the mark at carrier rise. Hova was deprived of second place through interfering with K rikiriroa In the Parnell' Handicap Bush Child was picked by the bulk of fo.lowers of the game as a very likely winner, Doris Wilkes also having a lot of followers. Shrewd people pinned their faith to Rexcordiuin, who was fourth fancy, wh le Tim Doolan carried even more than the visitor. Dorothy Dimple was also well backed. The mission of Lena Patch seemed to be to interfere with other horses, and she did so to some purpose, Lieutenant coming in for a lot of attention, so much so that occupants of the stands started to hoot the driver, and when she finished in front of that gelding it was certain that action would be taken. An enquiry was soon begun and ended, the result being that A. Barker, driver of Lena Patch, was put out for two years and the stake awarded to Lieutenant and second place to Rexcordium, a finish up which was much appreciated by the public, and especially by the backers of the last-named. There was more in this race than met the eye. The example made of Barker should be a warning to unfair horsemen. The Great Northern Trotting Derby was picked as a good thing for Chid, by St. Elmo, a horse that once trotted with distinction in Auckland. J. Bryce had great confidence in Chid’s ability, and saved her all he could, and when Miss Rolfe had about run herself out and Vice-Admiral had had enough, he brought the black filly along with a run which carried her to the head of affairs, and she ultimately won by two lengths from Miss Rolfe, Vice-Admiral being eased up several lengths away. Chid ran at a 2.18 gait, good time for a three-year-old event. It was satisfactory that the race was so interesting on account , of;the small field, which may happen at any time with classic laces. Mintson was made favourite for the Great Northern Handicap, Soda (ridden by F E. Jones) being the selond phoice, these horses being from the stable of J. Bryce, who had Kn : ght rid ing Mintson. Soda, well handled iy Jones, won by a neck fron Sandrift, Mintson being a length away in a most interesting finish. Miss Rolfe and Vice-Admiral were produced for the St. Helier’s Handicap, and the first-named carried more money than Stone Beldon and ViceAdmiral. Mss Rolfe showed her speed, but Vice-Admiral cut her down and won in good style, Stone Beldon being some lengths away. The totalisator returns brought the investments for the eight events to £24,584 10s., as compared with £24,934 10s. last year. August Child was fourth. Time, 2min 24 l-ssec. SECOND DAY. On Sa.urday the business was gone on witn under the most favourable conditions, and investments reached to £24,369 10s., as aga nst £20,504 10s., bringing the total to £48,954 for two days. Jaylyn, the favourite, made no sort of show in the Oaks (Handicap, and Highflyer, the second favourite, might have won had he been as steady a goer as Scientist, who defeated him by several lengths. George Akwood, the favourite for the Tramway Handicap, never once flattered his admirers, but Dabster did, and Manuka Park and Bellgana only beat him because the more reliable goers. Belgian Queen shaped fairly well, but Jays Belle did not reproduce her best. The race against time, the 2min. 7 l-ssec. put up by Country Bell on the same track, and which Admiral Wood was expected to attempt to lower, only produced one trier. This was M. Edwards’ fine mare Adelaide Direct, a daughter of Directway and a mare by Honest Harry, and it was a rare treat to see her in action, as she is a fine mover. Starting well behind the mile post, she came up under a good burst of speed, which carried her to the quarter in 31 4-ssec., to the half-mile in Imin. 4sec„ and to the three-quarters in lmin. 34sec., the speed being all on as she went down the back at a two-minute clip, and she finished up lei task in 2min. 6 2-ssec., thus chipping 4-ssec. off the Australasian record held by Mr. Morland’s mare Country Belle, who did not have quite such a perfect day, a slight head w’ind being against her. M. Edw’ards and his fine mare came in for a good reception on returning to salute the judge. The Summer Cup was generally thought to be a fair thing for Lady Haldane, but again, as in the Auckland Trotting Cup, that mare would not leave the mark. After Derby Dillon had led the field two-thirds of the way, Strategy and Reggie Huon headed him, and the last-named cut down Strategy and won handily, Jewel Chimes being a fair third. After breaking twice and losing ground, King Capitalist had no difficulty in beating St. Trella and Harold Jun or in the Christmas Handicap, in which Prince Rufus fell and Futurity did not leave his mark on time. Macwood was a very strong fancy for the Epsom Trot, hut went up when looking like a winner, and evidently has a weak spot or was not at his best. Paul Huon, driven by Orange, won in good style, and old Kirikiriroa got into second place, two lengths away, but Paul Huon won easily, and has proved very payable since he was purchased in Auckland last year. Adelaide Direct, notwithstanding her previous effort at record-making, was ready for another big task, but

the Ranfurly Handicap was really an easy thing for her, and she beat Alf. McKinney and Joan of Arc (who were never better) and the rest of the fie.d as if they were very ordinary. Sandrift, the favourite, after a hard race with Bronze Patch, the second favourite, secured a win in the Dominion Handicap in masterly fashion. Waterfall and Dillon Bell carried most money for the Eash Handicap, but the first-named did not begin or finish, and the other started well after his time and that possibly cost him the race. As it was, Stone Beldon, who led most of the way, was caugit just before entering the distance, and was beaten a long neck by August Child.
