TURF RESULTS.

WAIPA RACING CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. DEPREDATION WINS CUP. The opening meeting of the Waipa Racing Club was held at Te Awamutu on Saturday last, when a large crowd gathered at the club’s new and up-to-date course. A great number of Auckland sportsmen journeyed through m the special train, whilst from far and near the residents of surrounding districts assembled for a thorough afternoon’s enjoyment. Every credit is due to the secretary, Mr. A. J. Bray, and the hard-working officials, who toiled hard and succeeded in making the gathering a pronounced success. The totalisator staff under the efficient management of Messrs. Blomfleld and Co. handled the large sum of £12,925 10s. During the afternoon a handsome cup, presented by Messrs. H. H. Robertson and E. J. Ralph-Smith was handed to Mr. R. Barlow, owner of Depredation, winner of the Te Awamutu Cup, while Mr. I. S. Hardley, owner of Bingham, the winner of the WAipa Stakes, was also the recipient of a cup donated by Mr. J. C. Montefiore. The president of the Waipa Racing Club, Mr. R. R. Hockley, congratulated the fortunate owners. The racing proved highly interesting, each event attracting a good field. A splendid field lined up for the opening event —the Waipa Stakes —Bezmar, Wake Up. Kiriwinning and Bingham being backed in that order. The last-named was early in the lead, and won easily by four lengths from the favourite and Sylvan Knight, the trio being well clear of their field at t..e finish. Ulster was a hot order for the Pirongia Hurdles, but though he flattered his supporters in the early stages he was well beaten at the finish. Ulster, Gluepot and Spalperion comprised the leading division going out of the straight, but were soon headed by Companion. who maintained his lead to the finish, winning by two lengths from Gluepp,t, with Ulster third. Kaiwhakahaere was fourth. Ngatimaru fell. The winner 'paid over a score.

Alf. Delaval was a solid favourite for the Orakau Maiden Handicap, with Erroneous and Hamlet best backed of the others. Erroneous led the field along the back of the course, but once the bend was reached British Arch asserted himself. Although Erroneous and Sir Francis came with a good run they could make no impression on British Arch, who won comfortably by half a length. The favourite got away badly, an 1 though he ran up to the leaders entering the straight he dropped right out at the finish. Half a dozen started in the Waipa Cup, the Auckland Cup candidate Depredation being backed down to a remarkably low price, the chances of the other runners not being considered seriously. Passing the stand Munster set out to make the pace, followed by Te Papapa. At the back of the course Munster still maintained the lead, the field being bunched together with Depredation well back. The latter then commenced to make up his ground and was within striking distance entering the straight. Nicely handled by Deeley, Depredation gathered the field in and won comfortably by a length from Munster, who was followed by Te Papapa. The rest of the field were close up. Ring Lupin, who was favourite for.

the Kihikihi Handicap, shot out from, the barrier and was never headed. Lightning came through at the finish, but she could not make any impression on the winner. Mill o’ Gowrie, who fared badly at the start, was third. Gin Shing quickly established a big lead in the Ohaupo. Handicap, and appeared to have the race well in hand entering the straight, where he completely faded out of the contest. The favourite Corregidor and Sir Multifid finished strongly, the former winning bv two lengths, with Merry Dan, who met with a bad passage throughout, third. Salvia was soon in front in the Paterangi Welter, followed by Pendoon. Sir Francis and Alf. Delaval. This order was maintained until entering the straight, where Prince Soult moved up to the leaders. In the run up the straight Rebel, who came from w’ell back, cut down Pendoon and Salvia and won by a length. King Lupin was sorted out and backed as if nothing else was in the Flving Handicap. Public opinion was fu’.iv justified by the result of the race, for nothing had a chance with the chestnut son of Lupin, who won from end to end in easy fashion. In both of his races at Te Awamutu he was at one part with the leaders, but faded right out when the real racing commenced. Munster, who ran two good races at the Takapuna meeting, demonstrated that he is still in form. In the Te Awamutu Cup he was out in front practically the whole of the journey and was only beaten in the last few strides by Depredation.

Te Papapa was unfortunate in the Waipa Cup, for, when racing into a nice position, she was knocked right out of a place, but, coming on again over the last portion of the journey, she appeared to be going faster than anything else in the race. Spalperion showed all of his old dash in the early part of the Pirongia Hurdles at the Waipa meeting, but could not stay’ the distance out. Companion, who paid a very respectable dividend at Te Awamutu on Saturday last, has plenty of pace, and jumped splendidly throughout the race. He should further add to his owner’s revenue during the season. St. Francis ran two good races at the Waipa meeting, finishing second in the Orakau Maiden Handicap and running well up to the field throughout when competing in the Welter Handicap. Salvia was out in front in the Paterangi Welter at Te Awamutu and nearly’ succeeded in winning from end to end, just being gathered in on the post by Rebel, who had run well up in the Te Awamutu Cup. Merry’ Dan had a very bad passage in the Ohaupo Handicap at the Waipa meeting. He got away badly’ and was in trouble throughout the race. He was galloping on very strongly at the finish.
