N. Z. TROTTING CUP CANDIDATES.
SENSATIONAL TRIAL AT ADDINGTON.
(By Telegraph—Christchurch Correspondent.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Two well-fancied candidates for the New Zealand Trotting Cup in Cathedral Chimes, driven by Dunn, and Admiral Wood, driven by Bryce, created a sensation by getting over a mile and ahalf in 3min 16sec. a record for any New Zealand track. Breaking away at the half-mile post they raced on terms all through the first mile, which was reeled off at a great rate of speed. Both horses were driven right out to the winning post, the time recorded being the fastest ever put up either in training or with the colours up on the Addington track for a mile and a-half. Cathedral Chimes appeared to hold his stable mate safe at the business end. and his showing was such as to greatly enhance his Cup prospects. Agathos was fully extended over a mile and a-half in harness. He went the first mile in brilliant style, but did not do the remainder of the journey nearly so well. r Reay sent Tommy C. for a solid two miles but the time recorded was disappointing. The Cup horse did not settle down to his task at all well, and also put in a couple of skips. Cappricio showed a nice turn of speed in getting over the two miles in harness. She is in great racing trim just at present, and capable of bettering any of her former showings. Author Dillon, who is looking a picture of health, was responsible for an attractive work-out over a mile and ahalf. Standing Hannah M. up a big lead her had -her measure at the end of a mile and a-quarter. and finished up his task in great style. All things considered, it was a fine achievement on the part of the Derby winner.
