ELLERSLIE ITEMS.

On Saturday morning- some useful work was indulged in. Several jumping lessons took place, the hunter Compromise being the first to make a start over the steeplechase fences, the Spalpeen gelding jumping the sod wall double and stone wall twice. The chestnut is a very slow fencer. Captain Lock and Tangihaere were a pair that pleased the onlookers very much by the way they popped over the mixed fences of the steeplechase jumps on the flat. Both seem very fit, and should keep their opponents fairly busy on Saturday. Ranza Mist, alone, jumped the double fences and the stone wall. The leggy son of Loch Ranza then put in a couple of sand circuits, and was a very tired horse indeed on the completion of his task. Okaihau and his stable companion. Hopye, gave the most finished display of the week among the schooling division at headquarters. The pair negotiated the sod wall double fences, and stone wall. It was quite a pleasure to watch this bout of finished track schooling.

Mr. Ben. Myers indulged his favourite hunter Bowler in a few flies over the timber and stone walls. It would be hard to pick which enjoyed the bout the most, the rider or the horse. Mr. Frank Green, Junr., sent Jackaranda, a qualified hunter, over the double fences, stone wall, two of the big battens, and the sod wall. It was, however, a very tired horse that negotiated the water jump and wisely left the stone wall alone. Gold Necklet and Lady Winsome spurted half a mile in 51 2-ssec, with a hold of the former, a task that kept Hemisphere and a companion busy to finish in 51 4-ssec, the former being in front. F. Macmanemin’s juveniles spurted two furlongs in couples, with only a fraction of a second between the pairs, all finishing under 26sec from a flying start.

Kidderminster was bowling along with a free stride, looking fresh, while Kitty Bellairs and Independence were content with light tasks. The former is losing her winter condition. Another trio that were stretched out at top and hurried up some were Coleraine, Cardrona and Dancastor, finishing in the order written. Pateonga pleased the tracksiders by the way he ran along over a short course. The Marble Arch gelding reflects credit on his owner, Mi-. Pat. Bolton, for the splendid condition in which he has his charge. The Bardolph—Carmine filly beat a couple of young ones in a two furlongsprint, this being her best showing to date on the track. The Australianbred one looks like being useful when more matured. Colonel Soult alone shot round the sand circuit like a piece of well-oiled machinery. This pipe opener will do the little brown Soult. gelding a lot of good. Bellacity and a stable, companion were all out to run three furlongs on the sand in fair time. Silver Lupin and a mate ran a furlong further in 54 3-ssec, the former winning easily. Homeric was handling himself well over a short course, settling- his companion. The All Black —Wordy Warfare colt All Talk is on the improve. He set Genevieve and Ngatiwerewere a severe task to keep with him to the end of a sand nine furlongs, run in the failtime of 2min 4 l-ssec, a task which Dewy Morn and a mate accomplished in 2min 5 2-ssec.

The . half brother by Monoform — Analogy to Analogue (late Worley the Knut), was put up for auction the other day, but a tenner was the best price offered for the two-year-old, and in consequence no deal took place. Thursday turned ou t another fine morning, and good useful work was again witnessed Most of the two-year-olds were on the easy list. Mullingar outpaced Soultane over a short sprinting course on the sand where all the fast work took place.

Waiutu was anxious to try conclusions with the watch, but her pilot thought otherwise and restricted the flying little chestnut to medium pace ■work.

The Stepniak—Annoyed gelding, King of the Valley, Flagship, Tragedy King, Loyal Arch, Glittering Sands, Harlestone, Jocular, Colonel Soult. Delemar, Gold Lac, Fisher, Pateonga, and Te Papapa also put in useful work separately. Kidderminster beat a companion over half a mile in the fair time of 51 4-5 sec. Silver Lupin and St. Francis were also sent on a sprinting mission, the former showing to most advantage. Rae’s charges Merry Roe and Bleriot separately put in good useful paces, while All Talk showed the way to Sir Ralph and Castalia, the latter giving her companions a break and a heating over nine furlongs, casting the circuit past in 2min 2sec —fair time. Homeric, who looks a picture, spurted three of four furlongs in 39 2-ssec. The two-year-old Rock Diamond and the Bardolph filly flew over a slippery three furlongs, being together. Pendoon, Duhallow, Tangihaere. Coleraine, Marble Star, Bellacity and Pierrot were not hurried up, all performing useful work.

Royal Irish is fast throwing off the winter condition. The Soult horse slipped over six furlongs nicely in company with Lady Penury. The former comes back quickly. Sea De’il was present and was sent a circuit steadily, brushing over the last five furlongs nearly at top. Spalspire put in two medium pace rounds.

Master Grizette, Prince Soult, Sir Multifid, Fionnuala, Idra, Waihinepai, Genevieve and Mossman put in tasks of an easy order. Blueform, with a feather weight (V. Cotton) in the saddle, ran six furlongs in a shade under Imin 21sec, but was tiring at the finish.

Royal Loop, Okaihau and Hopye ran a sand circuit on the bit, with heads together at the end of the journey. All three are well. Dancastor was making hard work ot the last four of six furlongs in very moderate time. Takanini was taking matters easy with a couple of moderate rounds on the tan. THE JUMPERS. Crispeen, after a couple of easy circles, flew four of the big hurdles, covering a lot of ground in his jumping. The Channel alone put in a lively round over the sod wall double fences and the stone wall. The Captain Webb gelding still fences a bit high, a fault easily got rid of with practice in company. Brookfield, Ulster and Kinkora ran over the big hurdles in the above order. The former well-conditioned pair had the latter in a tangle at the tail end of the lesson. Rajah’s half brother, Nukutawhiti, flew a couple of the little sticks, and is a very quick -fencer. Dewy Morn, 1 Nildah and Sir Rosa went over four of the big schooling battens. Dewy Morn is a quick fencer, and Nildah has improved very much of late. Barbwire also jumped some of the same hurdles alone, giving a good display over the timber. Ranza Mist alone negotiated the sod wall double jump, stone wall, two hurdles, and the same steeplechase fences again, fencing rather high. The bigbrown looks a bit light. Mollyhawk waited on Giraffe and gave the big gelding a lead over the steeplechase fences, and after cantering round again jumped the sod wall double and stone wall. The little "chaser seems none the worse for last week's mishap, when she came down and smashed the saddle to pieces. Three of the Pakuranga Hunt Club candidates, Glendalough, Tetigi and Compromise, galloped round the sand at top. The first-named had her companions scratching all the way, Compromise being beaten off. Tuesday morning was bleak and showerv. ' The principal sprints were Tatterley beating Homeric over half a. mile in a shade under 51sec on the sad. Idra Dancastor and another six furlongs in Imin 20 2-ssec, finishingclose together, in above older. Brookfield and Ulster swung round the track at top, finishing attractively. Cardrona, Silver Lupin and a companion cleaned up six furlongs in the fair time of Imin 19 4-ssec, a task which Pendoon, Lady Penury and Royal Irish (in order) accomplished in Imin 19 l-ssec, J. O'Shea, A. J. McFlinn and J. Conquest being their respective pilots. Okaihau, Hopye and Royal Loop ran round in this order in 2min 7 2-asec. Nildah went over some of the big battens with Conway in the saddle, fencing cleaner than usual. Dewv Morn and Goldmount jumped a few of the big battens well, but the latter pulled up very lame. Conway gave Glendalough a run over two of the pony hurdles and then schooled the Spalpeen —Waimangu mare over the big battens, which she jumped equally as well. Tangihaere and Jackarander finished >up the morning’s schooling work by going over the double fences, stone walk and cantering round negotiated the sod wall and the same fences, Tangihaere giving a very fine exhibition of dean fencing. J. Kelly and Mr. F. Green were the men on top.
