FAREWELL GIVEN TO AUCKLAND SPORTS.

A farewell smoke concert was tendered at the Doncaster Dining Rooms, Auckland, last Weoresday evening by the Totalisator Employees’ Recreation Club to Messrs. P. Adams, Alex. Young, L. Beaumont, K. Ramsay, and P. Sheehan, well-known in sporting circles, who are about to leave for the front, where many of their club comrades are fighting the Huns. The chair was occupied by Mr. H. Whistance, who was supported by Messrs. H. Tilley, S. Yates, H. S. Wilson, W. Adams, Wynn Gray, C. D. Halstead. T. Urquhart, W. Rowe, E. Levy, B. Heyson, J. Williamson, and P. Blackman. A very pleasant evening was spent with songs and recitations, items being contributed by Messrs. C. James, O’Malley, E. Aylett, Hector Black, P. Sheehan, McDermott, Wynn Gray, J. Smith, Duncan Black, Archie Campbell, and W. Purcell (accompanist). The chairman, in his opening remarks, read apologies from Messrs. C. F. Mark, N. H. Gorton, F. Yonge, J. F. Hartland, and H. H. Hayr, and extended a welcome to the guests and visitors for an enjoyable evening. He referred to the death of an old and esteemed colleague, Mr. T. Lillybrand, who was well-known to numerous members in the room as one of the oldest totalisator employees in New

Zealand. Various toasts were honoured, including “The Allies,” proposed by Wynn Gray and responded to by Mr. Rowe; “The Press,” proposed by the chairman and responded to by Mr. Morton; “The Employers,” proposed by Mr. A. Young and responded to by Mr. H. J. Hayr; “The Army and Navy,” proposed by Mr. W. L. Arthur and responded to by Mr. Pollen; “The Departing Troops,” proposed by the chairman and responded to by Messrs. P. Sheehan and Alex. Young; and “The Sporting Fraternity,” proposed by Mr. J. Williamson and responded to by Mr. W. Adams. A presentation was made during the evening by the chairman from the committee of the club to Mr. Percy Adams, late assistant secretary and treasurer of the club. The committee of the club who arranged the function consisted of Messrs. H. Hayr, jun., A. Lovegrove, W. Russell, R. Chatfield, B. Conway, J. Reed. H. Whistance, and H. C. Whyman (hon. secretary).
