Mr. E. J. Watt’s agents have sold Maori King to Mr. W. H. Mackay, of West Maitland. Sir George Clifford appears to have had a very fair sale of his surplus consignment of horses in Australia, notwithstanding that prices were lower than usual in the non-totalisator State in which they were disposed of. In Hobart recently Bishop Stephen expressed regret that Tasmania received a considerable portion of its levenue “through the licensing of a demoralising and degrading practice.” He added that “even if it were true that gambling is so deeply rooted in human nature that suppression is impossible, that does not absolve the State from the disgrace of being the only part of the British Empire that profits by gambling, and from the greater disgrace of feeling no shame.” in commenting on this “Pilot” in the “Referee” says:—“The Government finds the revenue from ‘Tattersall’s’ sweeps very useful, and the question arises whether Bishop Stephen could saj’ with definiteness that Tasmania has retrograded morally since they were first drawn in that State. If it has not it can scarcely be contended the sweeps have done it much harm.”
