ATHLETICS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WANGANUI, Monday. The most striking Mature of the Caledonian Society’s sports wlucn were held in Cook’s Gardens on Saturday, in fine weather, was the splendid running of Norman Cantell, the Auckland amateur long-distance crack He won the mile from scratch in 4min. 46 2-ssec., winning comfortably, and the half-mile, also from scratch, in 2min. 3¥2 sec., fairly easily. He also ran third in the 440yds. from the 12yds. mark. These performances made him a tie for the points prize with N. Shale, a local splinter, who won the 440yds. and ran second in both the 130yds. and 22Cyds. To decide who should take the cup the committee arranged for the pair to run a quarter mile, and as the handicapper declared in favour of them both starting off the same mark they did so. Shale drew inside position and made the pace warm from the jump, with Cantell on the outside all the way. The latter was covering more ground, but he knew he had to keep his opponent going ali the way, otherwise he would be beaten lor pace in the run home. There was nothing between them for 350 yards, when Cantell began to draw away, and he eventually wen by a couple of yards after a close race. Cantell’s running was greatly admired, and his win was a popular one. Another Aucklander who performed with distinction was Ban Turner, the cyclist, who won the three cycle races easily. He had only one opponent in each case, but he rode in splendid form, and is one of the most promising young riders seen here for many a day. Had it not been for the Auckland team the running and cycling events would have been a fiasco, but the sterling performances put up by Cantell and the brilliancy displayed by Turner made amends for the poorness of the fields numerically.
