Dunedin J.C.’s Forthcoming Gathering —Panmure’s Prospects at Wingatui —Riccarton Candidates Engaged at Wangandi—Tannhauser Resumes Work.
(By Tele.—Christchurch Correspondent.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Monday.
The Dunedin Jockey Club’s meetings always attract a lot of support from Riccarton stables, and no less than 40 horses were railed south on Saturday to assist at the forthcoming gathering. First Glance has been paid up for m the Cup, but her special mission may be the Hazlett Memorial Plate on the second day. She has done very little work since returning from Well.ngton, and cannot be at her best. Bee is in great heart, but if the going is heavy, of which there is every prospect, her chance under 9.6 wll be discounted. Snub did a useful gallop on Thursday mornmg, and with such a capable horseman as F. E. Jones in the saddle he should run well. Of the others, Rorke’s Drift and United Service have the best prospects.
Wardancer did not show anything like his true form at Riccarton in the Middle Park Plate, and he may race to better advantage in 1 the Dunedin Champagne Stakes. Bore has been showing greatly improved form in his schooling tasks at Riccarton during the past fortnight. He should have a great chance m the hurdles on the first day at Dunedin. Panmure now figures as top weight _n the Publicans’ Handicap at Dunedin, and he is by no means overweighted. He did a nice gallop at Wingatui on Saturday mornmg, and is Ikely to start favourite. Nones and The Toff were sent North last week to fulfil engagements at the Wanganui meeting. Both are engaged m the Jackson Stakes, and they should have a good deal to say in its decision.
Bee seems to have more than a fair share of weight m the Wanganui Cup, and it is doubtful if she will be sent North to contest .t. More favourably treated are Emperador and Nones, and the better of Mason’s pair looks like playing a prominent part in the decision of the race. The only other Canterbury representative engaged s Moulu, who cannot have much chance iii view of his recent form.
The Martian gelding Tannhauser has been taken in hand again by P. McGrath, and another attempt will be made to get him through a preparation. He has been off the scene for a long time, but he looks well after his rest at Riccarton.
On Thursday morning Moddite and Bore were given a schooling task in company. They jumped two pony hurdles well, and then took on four of the bigger obstacles Bore showed more pace than his companion up to the last hurdle, which he hit hard in front, but he made a good recovery. Recorder’s victory at Taranaki was well anticipated by local stay-at-home speculators, who profited largely by her success. She has a fine turn of speed, and may have more than an outside chance in the Flying Handicap at Wanganui.
The Wellington sportsman Mr. H. Whitney does not intend to take his team south for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting.
With the approach of the jumping season quite a number of horses have put in an appearance at Riccarton recently to be fitted for winter racing. Amongst their number are Sport, Tannhauser, Free, Mescal, and Daylight Bill.
