TROTTING
CANTERBURY NOTES. (By Tele. —Christchurch Correspondent.) The Australian-owned geiding Buff, who registered a record of 3min. 21 4-ssec. on the Auckland track last season, has returned to Sydney. NEW BRIGHTON TROTTING CLUB’S AFFAIRS. Apparently the last has now been heard of the trouble connected with the financial affairs of the New Brighton Trotting Club. At the annual meeting last June exception was taken by the auditor to the balance-sheet placed before members, and as a result of subsequent developments the matter came under the attention of the New Zealand Trotting Association, which appointed an auditor to go into the club’s finances. This official presented his report at a special meeting of the Association on Wednesday evening, when, apart from the members of the Board, there were present Mr. A. M. Loasby (representing the New Brighton Trotting Club), Mr. F. T. Pannell (hon. treasurer), and Mr. A. I. Rattray (secretary). The evidence of the secretary and treasurer was heard, and cross-examina-tion was made. The officials of the club then retired. After deliberation the meeting shortly after midnight arrived at the following decision: — “That this Association having since its previous deliberation in connection with the New Brighton Trotting Club received the report of the speci-ally-appointed auditor, taken the evidence of the secretary, assistant secretary and treasurer of the club, and examined the books and documents placed before it, is of the opinion that it has been clearly proved that prior to the election of the present committee extreme laxity was shown in, the management of the club’s affairs. The Association cannot exonerate the
club’s officers from blame, more particularly the ex-president, the treasurer and the old committee, for the manner in which the business of the club has been conducted in the past. Further, the Association demands the club’s assurance that in future all accounts in regular order shall be passed for payment by the committee, and that all the business of the club shall be carried out strictly in accordance with its rules. While the Association recognises that it was the duty of the former auditor to direct the attention of the executive of the club to an omission from the balance-sheet, it regrets that that official thought fit to circularse each member of the club before the club’s executive had dealt with his report.” It was further resolved to call upon the club to pay the expenses of the enquiry as soon as the same are ascertained.
