GISBORNE RACING CLUB.
SUMMER MEETING. RUPAHU WINS CUP. The Gisborne Racing Club were favoured with beautiful weather on Thursday, when their summer meeting was opened at the Park racecourse. A large attendance was in evidence, many people journeying to the course by motor, a number having travelled a considerable distance overland. With good fields engaged the racing proved of a high standard, the starting be.ng most satisfactory and the finishes keen. Mr. R. H. Skipwlth was responsible . for the horses being despatched in a manner that could not fail to give satisfaction, while Mr. R. B. Lusk officiated as judge. The excellence of the arrangements and the smoothness with which everything in connection with the meeting passed off were the subject of much favourable comment, and the secretary (Mr. H. E. Dodd) is deserving of no little praise for the
capable manner in which he conducted the gathering. The sum of £11,536 was handled on the machine, as against £13,805 for the opening day of last year. Of the quintette of starters for the First Hand_cap Hurdles, Kew (with J. Deerey in the saddle) was elected favourite, with Scorch and Fagot best backed of the others. The favourite commenced well, but failed to maintain the pace in the latter stages. Scorch ran prominently throughout, and eventually wrested a comfortable victory from Bravest by three lengths, Fagot being a couple of lengths away third, with Kew fourth.
Fourteen' faced the starter in the Maiden Scurry, in which the disappointing Boggitts (on whom McFlynn had the mount) was for some reason or other selected as favourite. Hexton, Pendant and Con also received wide support. Lady Gazeley and Hexton made the running and pract.cally had the race to themselves, a desperate finish resulting in favour of the Gazeley mare by a nose, Hexton being two lengths in advance of Serbia, with Con fourth.
The Gisborne Cup next claimed attention, six horses going to the post to contest the big event of the afternoon. Backers were net long n placing Rupahu, who had the services of W. Ryan, in pride of position on the totalisator, The Summit and Pursefiller being the next in demand.Rupahu made the pace a cracker from the start, and though The Summit made a big attempt to get up with the favourite during the race up the straight, the latter had no difficulty in winning easily by four lengths. The Summit just managed to last long enough to defeat Pursefiller by a short head for second honours, while Kooya was a head away fourth. The Cup winner, Rupahu, was led on to the lawn, while Sir Jas. Carroll, president of the club, presented the owner, Mr. W. S. Davidson, with the
, cup (donated by Mr. F. J. Lysnar) j amid hearty applause. Otara’s chances were most favoured ; for the Te Hapara Handicap, in which '. there were seven starters, but victory went to an outsider in Cleft, who defeated the favourite by a couple of lengths, with Brunswick a length away third. There was only a quartette of starters in the Flying Handicap, in which Watchful and Zeus fought out a desperate finish, the former prevailing by a head. Rewanga was four lengths away, third, with Asterias last. Eight started in the First ‘Welter Handicap, Multicipal fulfilling the expectations of his backers by defeating the second favourite, Jem, by a length, with Spain half a length away third. Multikoff was fourth. Backers were again successful in their anticipations in the Railway Hack Handicap, for which they installed King of Athol favourite, with Admiral Beatty and Anxious best backed of the other five starters. The grey gelding had a great tussle up the straight with Lady Multifid, whom he defeated by a neck, while Admiral Beatty was half a length away, third, with Anxious fourth. A trio of candidates weighed out for the Park Handicap, Despatch Carrier carrying the confidence of the public, but the son of Marshal Soult had to be content with second honours, Tavistock winning easily by half a dozen lengths. The favourite had to be hard ridden to stall off a strong challenge fiom Sm lax, who just failed to secure cecond honours by a nose. The results were: — FIRST HANDICAP HURDLES.
