Waipukurau J.C.’s Patriotic Spirit— Settler Recommissioned—R. Gooseman’s Quartette of Novices.
(By Telegraph—Napier Correspondent.)
NAPIER, Monday. The Waipukurau Jockey Club have decided to donate the whole of the profits accruing from their annual race meeting, to be held on Easter Monday next, to the Patriotic Fund. The stakes to be distributed will be of the same t-mount as given last year, namely, £1125. At the just finished show of the Central A. and P. Association, Mr. G. Hunter, M.P., donated a two-year-old filly by Mystification out of Tattle to the Patriotic Fund. The filly formed one of the weight-guessing competitions, and was won by a resident of Waipukurau. Settler, who has been enjoying an extended holiday on ms owner’s (Mr. P. Hunter) station at Waipukurau, will be brought in to Hastings this week, and will again be an occupant of one of the boxes at R. Gooseman’s establishment.
At a committee meeting of the Waipukurau Jockey Club, held on Friday night, Mr. F. Armstrong was one of those elected a steward of the club. Other new additions to the controlling body of the club were Messrs. P. Wall (owner of Suratura), D. McLeod (owner of Tav.stock and Zeus), and Mr. T. E. Whelch, who owns the hurdler Imposter. In the near future it is quite on the cards that Sleight-of-Hand will be put to the jumping portion of the industry. He should, on family connections, make good in the new departure, for his dam, Rouble, is a fullsister to Evening, who, besides being a good one at the lepping business, produced Morning, who has conclusively proved that he is no slouch as a lepper. R. Gooseman is busy at present imparting instruction to a quartette of novices, the new chums consisting of a three-year-old full-sister to Sleight-of-Hand (Mystification—Rouble), a four-year-old son of Mystification and Tattle, a three-year-old filly by Conqueror out of Mysticism, the lat.tei’ ware being a full-sister to Mistie, and a rising two-year-old son of Sylvia Park and Sanguine. The last-named youngster is a full-brother to Sanguinary and half-brother to Ardent and Royal Mary. Eldepee, who is an inmate of G. Colello’s establishment, has been registerd as the joint property of Messrs C. D. Kennedy and R. Johnston. Eldepee is a four-year-old gelding by Signalman out of Mangatarata, this brood matron being a half-sister by Jet d’Eau to Grand Slam and Bridge.
Indigo, Sicily, Step and India, who are being got ready for the fray by R. Gooseman, are progressing satisfactorily in their track essays on the try-out at Hastings.
