AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB’S SUMMER MEETING.

CATHEDRAL CHIMES WINS CUP. The morning opened cold for the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting, but improved as the day advanced, and there was a large assemblage at Alexandra Park to witness the sport and to see the first thousand pound lace decided on the club’s course there. The announcement that the crack Canterbury mare Country Relle would attempt to lower the record for one of the purses hung up by the club was an additional attraction for those who love to see good pacers at work. It .s safe to estimate the attendance as one of the largest, if not actually the largest, seen at the Park, and, fortunately, the crowd were well catered for in the way of entertaining events for trotters and pacers, for which there is now in Auckland an unsatisfied demand, so keen on following this branch of rac ng are the people. The sum of £24,884 10s. was passed through the totalisator. The business of the day opened with the Introductory Trot Handicap (in saddle), for horses that have never won in better than 2.35 to the mile. Papatina was made favourite, probably because the veteran H. Chatter s - was in the saddle on Miss Huon, Jun., but that well-known enthusiast showed that he is not too old at 72 years, and he won the race practically from end to end on his Capitalist mare, who had two lengths advantage of Papatine as they crossed the line. Papatina as they crossed the line, time of the winner worked out at 2.35 to the mile, and Papatina’s time at 2.33. There was keen excitement when Country Belle appeared on the track and started to jog round with Bryce, the Southern reinsman behind her, and Julian on Black Northern to act as pace maker. No t me was cut to waste in preliminaries, and the mare was taken well behind the mark and came with a rare burst of speed to the starting post. She was privately timed to get the 'first quarter in 32 3-ssec., the half n lmin. 3sec., and the full distance in 2min. Bsec., which was the official time for the mile, so that the mare just failed to beat her own record, but put up a mile record for the track. The condit ons were not quite as favourable as they would have been a little later. A great reception was accorded the mare and her driver as they came back to the paddock. The field for the Auckland Trotting Cup was only reduced by two, Makomako and Dr. Chutney being the defect ons. In view of an excellent track performance the American-bred

Hal Zolock was installed In pride of position on the totalisator, while Cathedral Chimes, who came from Christchurch with a big reputation, was a staunch second favourite, it being reported that Bryce’s representative was in splendid fettle for his engagement. The Sydney-owned mare The Maid was third in request, while substantial backing was accorded G.M. and Master Park. Soon after the start the race resolved itself into a contest between Hal Zolock and Cathedral Chimes, who raced at the head of the 'field am dst great excite-

ment from their respective supporters, the rest of the field bemg some distance away. The favourite’s chances looked bright four furlongs from home, but racing towards the straight entrance it was not ced that Bryce’s candidate was going the easier, and once in a line for the winn.ng post the Canterbury colt’s victory was loudly proclaimed. Master Park, who lost considerable ground in the earlier stages owing to his inability to get going well, made a big effort over the concluding mile, and was assured of third place as the field raced towards the home turn, but he had no chance with the two leaders, who were well clear of the field. In the run to the post Cathedral Chimes gradually increased his lead, winning comfortably from Hal Zolock, with Master Park a fair third. The December Handicap was cleverly won oy Hymen from Rotomanuka by two lengths, none of the others getting within striking distance of the pair at the business end.

Whispering Willie, the favourite, had an easy win n the Eden Trot, Bryce drivmg. King Capitalist was running second when a tyre collapsed and caused him to lose his place. Rena Pointer, the favour.te, quite outclassed her neld in the Parnell Handicap, and Prinzora and Arrah Wanna, the first and second favourites, led the field home in the Waitemata Handicap. Ao-tea-roa was a pronounced favourite for the Great Northern Handicap, but her backers d.d not get a run as she failed to go to her time. Princess Sherwood and Lady Child, the third and fourth favourites, finished first and second, the winner . taking 2min. 17 2-ssec. Master Park ran r.ght up to his best form, but was about four lengths away from the winner. The busmess of the day concluded with the St. Heliers Handicap, which old Walnut won from scratch, pay mg a rattling good dividend, the old horse trott ng 2min. 17sec.
