METROPOLITAN TROTTING CLUB.

NEW ZEALAND TROTTING CUP DAY. COUNTRY BELLE WINS. A DISAPPOINTING RACE. (From Our Christchurch Correspondent) Though early morning indications were quite favourable for the opening day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting, on Tuesday, November 9, the vagaries of the weather were again in evidence. As the result of overnight ra.n the track was decidedly holding, but during the first three races it was drying very quickly. No sooner had the Cup been decided, however, than a heavy rain squall came up and though it only lasted half an hour it converted the course into a veritable quagmire. There was a particularly large attendance, including representatives from every part of the Dominion. Evidently money was just as plentiful as ever, for no less than £9319 was speculated on the Cup alone, the grand total for the day amounting to £40,251, as against 142.5G9 on the corresponding day last year. There was solid backing for Huia and T.ka in the Spring Handicap, the latter finishing up a slightly better favourite that the Aucklander. Albertoria looked to have winning prospects for a round, when she went to pieces as the result of the slippery going. This gave Huia his chance and from th.s out he had matters all his own way. Rummy threatened danger halt a 'mile from home, but left his feet under pressure, just struggling home from Mushroom for second money. The heavy going' was expected to suit George Hard, who was in consequence made favourite for the Empire Handicap. Starting off on a break, he never threatened danger, while Bronzewing, the second choice, gave an even worse exhibition. A rank outsider in Gold Crest was in front from start to finish and never gave the opposition a look in. For a time Vermont threw out a challenger, but she tired to almost a walk in the last furlong. Like most of its predecessors, the contest for the New Zealand 1 rotting Cup was robbed of much interest as the result of an indifferent start. Frandocia, St. Ursula, Wallace Wood. Adelaide Direct, and Win Soon all dwelt at the post so long as to quite spoil their chances, while at the end of a chain Adonis and Mandarene collided, the mishap putting both horses right out of court. The story of tlie race is soon told. After Eccentric and Don Caesar had made play for a mile and a-half Country Belle ran past them and from this out the issue was never in doubt. It was a great performance on the winner’s part, but she was lucky in getting away to a flying start and having a splendid passage all through. The unlucky horse of the race was Our Thorpe, who lost at least three seconds at the start and then had to thread his way through a big field. Had he gone off all right he would certainly have troubled the winner, for he was go ng in. great style once he got a clear run. Jingle was also unluck.) at the start, while Admiral Wood only ran his race in patches. A very heavy shower fell after tile Cup and by the time the Middleton Handicap came on for decision the course was fetlock deep in slush. After a long sequence of unavailing placed performances Olive L. did M. Edwards a good turn by getting to the front early and remaining there to the finish. She had to be kept going all through to stall off the attentions of Wild Tree, who was on her wheel all through the last circuit. Of the back markers Galatian and Michael Galindo gaves the best showings. bo bad was the going that on the drivers returning to the enclosure they could only be recognised with difficulty. For the first time out of many starts Fmilius was induced to leave the mark to time in the Lyttelton Handicap, and pacing like a piece of machinery all through, he never gave the opposition a look in. Succeed acted as his immediate attendant all through the second mile, but Bright Alice, the actual favourite, tired badly after showing a fine turn of speed for a mile and ahalA big field of saddle horses contested the St. Albans Handicap, but it was a one-horse race. Rawene started very smartly and was in front all the' way, winning with tlie _ tr . great P ease in 2min 22 4-ssec. When the nature of the track is considered the merits of the winner’s achievement is enhanced. Of the others Dot Robbins. Mountain Rose and Ludski gave the best showing. Childsdale was made a staunch taxourite for the Riccarton Handicap, the other six competitors all being fairly equally supported. Making, the most of his handicaps The Kings Genet al soon opened up a handy lead, which he maintained to the finish. Two fuilongs from home he broke and Ghiicts dale looked to have his measure. The latter left his feet at the same place, and, taking longer to settle down than The King’s General, suffered defeat by eight lengths. The day’s racing term mated with the Haglev Handicap, which attracted if high-class harness horses O.LC. was made favourite on account of het well known partiality for soft going, and she justified her reputation as a mud lark” bv scoring comfortably Disappear and John Dillon Only for a bad mistake m the back stiaiqht caused through slipping, the lattei would- probably have won. The weather condit.ons were perfect for the second day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on Thursday, and after the first two races had been decided the course was in splendid order. For an off day the attendance was very good, while the investments reached £36,813, as against £32,353 on the .second day last year. Notwithstanding their poor showing on Tuesday Whisth and Tika were the most fancied of the 1G starters ii. the Whiteleigh Handicap. The lattei', who has a great private, reputation, had every chance, for he was in front at the end of half a mile. A little further on he retired, and it was left to Huia to chase Mushroom. After a great .set to between the pair Mushroom just lasted long enough to win by a head. After the race the stipendiary stewards held an enqu’ry into the all’ to free use R. J. Munro, on the winner, made of his whip in the home straight. It was a most glaring case of unfaii' practise, and Munro was fortunate in getting off with a fine of £lO. Princess Sherwood started much better than any of the other limit horses in the iNovember Hand cap ami had such a useful lead at the end of a mile, as to make the chance of the others almost hopeless. Vermont put in a strong challenge half a mile from home, but' failed to sustain it. while Hesitation, the favourite, went too unsteadv to have much chance. Eminent, the Australian-bred son of Emulator, was made a staunch favourite tor the Courtenay Handicap, and lie fully justified the confidence reposed in him by coming away in the last furlong and winning easily in 4mm 35 2-ssec. Little Jewel Chimes put up a great race in getting second place, and it was hard luck for him to run up against such a good one as Eminent. Wallace Wood showed a rare burst of speed for a mile and a-half, but was very tired when Hie post was reached Frandocia and Persuader both spoilt their chances at the start, while Mandarene was ordered out of the race for anticipating the starting bell. Ngaraima. the favourite, flattered her supporters in the Metropolitan Handicap for three-parts of the journey, when she tired rather badly. This gave Galvanita, who had always been handy, her chance’, and she raced past the leader a furlong from the post, registering a comfortable and very popular win Soda ran another consistent race, While had Disappear not suffered so much interference he would assuredly have played a prominent part in the finish. , Mystic owed her victory in the Sockburn Handicap to her steadiness. Several of her immediate attendants in

the first mile, notably Galician, Hardy Wilkes, and Michael Galindo, showed more pace than her, but they all made mistakes. For a green one Hardy Wilkes gave a very promising showing and he is bound to do much better when more settled. A very high-class field of seven went out to contest the Free for All, run over a mile and a-quarter from a flying start. Country Belle, on the strength of her fine achievement in the Trotting Cup, was made favourite. After Eccentric and Emmeline had made the early runn.ng Country Belie had the.r measure three furlongs from home. Up to this stage Our Thorpe, who had lost at least three seconds at the start, was not taken into calculations. Travelling along at a great bat he got to Country Belle a hundred yards rrom the post, and beat her by a couple of lengths. It was the most remarkable performance ever put up on the Addington track, for after liaving all the worst of the start Our Thorpe got to the end of the mile and a-quarter in 2min 41 2-ssec, a 2.9 gait to the mile. He was timed to run his last mile in a tick under 2.6. Ludski carried the bulk of the investments in the Railway Handicap, and two furlongs from home he appeared to have the result in safe keeping. Then he tired and was passed by Bright Alice and Little Tib, the former winning a good race by a length in the smart t.me of 2min 14 3-ssec. By the time this race was run the track was particularly smart. Most of the eight starters in the Royal Handicap came in for solid support, but the result was affected by a mixed up start. Bonny Jenny made the early running, but Dot Robbins had her measure three furlongs from home, and won in the good time of 2 min 14 sec. The results were:— WHITELEIGH HANDICAP (Saddle) of 20()sovs. smin class. Two miles. 12 —R. J. Munro’s b g Mushroom, by Elect cneer colt, aged, llsec (Owner) 1 4 — Hua, 7sec (W. There was an enormous crowd pi °- sent at Addington on Fr’clay to witness the concluding day’s rac ng ot the Metropolitan Trotting Club. I he track was in good order, the only dravback being a strong nor-west wind, which raised clouds of dust and made the tasks of the back markers particularly severe. Speculation kept up very well, the sum of £4B 278. as against £42,776 on the concluding day or mt 1914 spring meeting, mak ng a tota of £125 343 for the gathering, computed with £117,999 last year . A well backed candidate in > i ('-• - rrni started proceedings by appropriating the Governor’s Handicap, but h . had a lot of luck in defeating Wild Tree Two furlongs from the post the falter had worked his way to the front, but over anxiety on the pan ot nis rider caused the Wildwood gelding leave h’s feet when he apparently had the race won. Chub and Mushroom both trotted consistently, but Galacian spoilt his cVance by a couple of misPrince ’ Berlin, one of J. Bryce s charges, was backed down to a very short price for the Victoria Handicap. He commenced very smartly, and. fa' oured with the inside running he just lasted lone- enough to sial off a determined challenge by Ma tchie. The latter lost several seconds in the fit st quarter, only for which he could haidly have lost Wallace Wood ran a very fair race for two miles, but then tired ba A V very high-class field of 11 harness horses went out to contest the Christchurch Handicap, the Ashburton representative St. Kevin being served up a strong order. Jewel Chimes,- who is 1 a particularly smart beginner, made the pace very solid for a mile and ahalf, when he was done with. Then Persuader took charge, and. sticking to his task in great style the long striding son of General Lincoln scored decisively in the smart time of 4mm 35sec. Adonis and Tommy C were both putting in great work at ish as was Envnent, who lost several seconds by be’ng slow to start Even so he finished close up in fifth place, registering a really high-class performmice Jingle and Frandocia both failed to strike a gait in the early stages, thereby quite spoil’ng their prospects. Granger was made a strong fayoui te r or the Australasian Handicap, though he ran a good race for over a mile he could not sustain Ins effort.. Disappear who had always been in the fighting line, then took charge, and from this out never gave the opposition a look in. Gladsome appeared to have a chance till she made a mistake two furlongs from the post. Michael Galindo, the fine gaited son of Galindo and Mavourneen, scored a very popular win in the Dominion Trotting Handicap. Though sore all round he went from start to finish without a mistake, and reeled off the two miles in the smart time of 4imn 42 l-ssec The stable mates Galician and Master Ravmond both gave creditable showings but Redchild, the favourite, fail-

ed to make the least impression en the winner.

Sixteen went to the post for the Hornby Handicap. Erin’s King being made a slightly better favourite than Cello Sydney Wilkes. The former was well placed all through, and, tak ng charge two furlongs from home, won handsomely in the splendid time of 3min 25 7-ssec. Ar’adne put in a fine mile, and Cello Sydney Wilkes showed a rare burst of speed all through the first mile. Solo was responsible for a remarkably smart performance in the Enfield Handicap. Starting very smartly she was within striking distance of Ludski and St. Kevin at the end of the first quarter, and in the back straight ran to the front. From th s out she was not asked to do her best, yet she got to the end of the mile in 2min 10 4-ssec. Breeze came down soon after the start. while Adonis, Frandocia. Mountain Rose and Tommy C all failed to strike a gait. The results were:— GOVERNOR’S HANDICAP (Saddle) of 200sovs. 4.55 class. Two m.les. 3 —W. H.
