CANTERBURY NOTES.
(By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) Admiral Wood goes into .1. Bryce’s stable in the course of a few days to be prepared for the New Zealand Trotting Cup. He is quite sound, and is in splendid condition for the task in front of him.
Tommy C .after a spell since the August meeting, is again in commission. R. Reay has his Trotting Cup candidate in good condition to start a solid preparation. When heading the field in the Longbeach Trot at Ashburton, Prinz and Joyful collided and both came down. Fortunately neither of the horses or their drivers were much the worse for their mishap. Though he was the only trotter in the field, Ohapi proved equal to downing the pacers in the Longbeach Trot on the first day of the Ashburton meeting, and as he was about the biggest outsider of the field his backers were rewarded with a splendid dividend. He was followed home by the favourite, La Franz, who showed plenty of pace, but failed to stay quite so well as the Quincey gelding. Phingaria, full-sister to Dan Patch, St. Kevin and Glendalough, put up a remarkable performance by winning the Winchmore Trot comfortably in 2m. 18s. As she was only handicapped to go 2m. 30s. it is no wonder that the
majority of the others were never in the hunt. Wild Elm, the second place filler, showed a rare burst of speed, but failed to finish as well as Pirangia. R. Allen has had another addition to his team in the Oamaru-owned gelding Allen Doone. The same trainer recently acquired a full-brother to the speedy pacer Prince Albert.
