HAWKE’S BAY.

A Speedy Youngster—Additional Foalings at Longlands — Blackheath Placed on Retired List. ( From Our Own Correspondent.) NAPIER, Alonday. Red Book and Alummer, in charge of T. F. Quinlivan and Al. J. Chaafe respectively, left Hastings on Thursday morning. The pair are. engaged at Avondale this week. One of the latest to volunteer for the front is R. Tierney, who for quite a number of years was connected with the Hon. J. D. Ormond’s training establishment at Karamu. Tierney is to be attached to the veterinary department of the forces. Air. A. J. Ellingham, who as a jockey, trainer and owner has been connected with racing for so many years, has sustained a severe loss in the death of one of his sons, Claude, who was killed in action at the Dardanelles. One of the speediest young ’uns seen out on the try-out of late at Hastings is Barley Sugar, the two-year-old daughter of .Maori King and Harley Bree. She is a half-sister to Royal Scotch and Royal Arms, and consequently is well connected with a brace of good performers. Kuropatangi, who returned his supporters the biggest dividend of the a! ernoon at the Dannevirke Hunt Club gathering last Thursday, is an aged son of Anser Anser. a mare bred by the late Air. W. Rathbone, of Waipawa. She was got by Natator from Gooseander, the latter mare being a full-sister to that gem of a performer .Merganser. Carillon, who scored in the Hack Welter at the steeplechase fixture of the Dannevirke Racing Club last week, is a half-brother by Finland to Chime and Beldame, and like them was bred by Air. T. H. Lowry, at Okawa. He is now owned by Mr. D. Kemp, who purchased him as a yearling from his breeder.

The' following additional foalings ■' ave laken place a'. Longlands, .Mr. E. J. Watt’s breeding establishment: —

Barley Bree (The Cardinal —Barley), a colt to .Maori King; Esmeh (Merriwee — Ismene), a colt to All Black; Perseis (Positano —Circe), a filly to Atlienic.

Blackall, who is advancing in favour in connection with the' betting over Ihe New Zealand Cup, is going along the right way in his track essays, and there is every indication that he will be seen to more advantage this season than was the case last term. Trials, who downed the opposition in the Ruahine .Maiden at the Dannevirke Hunt Club gathering last week, is owned by Hi e Hastings sport Air. J. AV. White. Trials is a three-year-old son of Tribulation and Opaline, and his previous collection was made in the Two-year-old Handicap at Waipukurau last Easter Alonday, when he got second berth to Gold Foil, and returned his supporters a hatful for second dividend.

Midnight Star must be pretty good or those opposed to him in the Spring Handicap at Dannevirke were not up to much, for the son of Starina, who has only been in active commission for a little over a couple of weeks, got second to Haumakaka in the event. Midnight Star is a half-brother to Want and Lady Elysian, the latter filly being due to make her debut in the Avondale Stakes this week. Blackheath (All Black —Rose Seaton) has been placed on the retired list, and the half-brother to Merton and Wee Rose will therefore not be seen out in action for some time to come.

Mr. E. J. Watt is mating his stud matrons as under this season: —All Blue, Tupono; Barley Bree, Mimic, La Notte, Tatters, Bluey, Blacking and Ventura to Wolawa; Perseis, Mrs. Wiggs, Orlay, Rose Seaton, Esmeh, Concordia, Bon, Blue River, Red Plume, Float, Wordy Warfare, Musette, Culprit and Dame Rumour, to All Black.

Mr. D. McLeod, of Waipukurau, has bestowed the cognomen of Pendant upon the four-year-old daughter of Motiti and Jewellery, who is being prepared for battle by J. Sceats at Nap ter Park. Indigo, who, bar accidents, is a certain starter in the New Zealand Cup, is making good progress in his exercises on the preparing trail at Hastings.

Mr. H. Hassal, of Clive, has leased Lord Fran to Mrs. G. S. Doleman. Lord Fran is a younger full-brother to Jem.

Marco Bello, who will probably represent Mr. T. H. Lowry in the Wanganui Guineas, was defeated by Merry Gain and Croesus in the Otanga Handicap, of one mile and 50 yards, at Dannevirke on Wednesday last, but the racing that he had there will no doubt benefit the Varco colt.

Mr. R. E. Harley has been appointed starter to the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club. In days gone by Mr. Harley was in the foremost flight of the gentlemen riders’ brigade in this district.

Diavolo, it transpires, was purchased by a couple of Gisborne followers of the sport for 500 guineas. Mr. P. P. Neagle, who bred D.avolo, has been lucky in the sales that he has effected with the progeny of Heavenly Twin, as he disposed of both Theodore and Sir Moseley at 800 guineas each, and now he has got the above figure for Diavolo. Mr. T. F. Walker, of Wairoa, has purchased Golden Sky, and he intends mating her with his own sire Bunkum this season. This owner has sent another of his brood matrons in Armaru to be associated with Mr. H. Hassall’s imported stallion Merry

Moment, who is standing at his owner’s place Sontra, Hastings.

The latest foalings to hand from Mr. E. J. Watt’s breeding quarters at Longlands are Concordia (Prudent King—Emblem) a colt to Macri King, and All Blue (Merriwee —Bluewater) a filly to Athenic.

J. Sceats has decided to waste no more time with Master Malachi and has accordingly retired him from active service.

Contusion is the appellation that has been bestowed upon All Blue’s two-year-old daughter by All Black. The local contingent of equ nes that were in evidence at the Marten meeting came out of the' ordeal satisfactorily, three winners (Hydrus, Hygia and Discussion) and a second in Hylatus being the result of the “Bay ’ representatives’ efforts. The Hon. J. D. Ormond has bestowed the following names on some of his two-year-olds: —Filly by Hymettus —Enyo, Hymeneal; colt by Hymettus— By By, Honey Bee; gelding by Hymettus —Straga, Strabo; colt by Hymettus—Florigold, Hymenaeus; filly by Hymettus—ldee, Idyllic; gelding by Hymettus —Woodhey, Woodlark; colt by Hymettus —Marty, Hyllus.
