SOUTH AUCKLAND RACING CLUB.
It may come as a surprise to some people when they learn that the •executive of the South Auckland Racing Club have purchased a new racecourse, five miles from Hamilton on the Newstead property, formerly part •of the Woodside Estate containing 177 acres. The price paid is £2B per acre. The land is said to be very suitable for the purpose, and •evidently the club contemplate a big future for racing in the Waikato. The distance from Hamilton is a disadvantage certainly, but if the ground gives the club greater facilities and more freedom than it has enjoyed in the past the railway arrangements may be made to suit the people and presumably the putting up of horses intended to compete at meetings has been well considered. The Waikato will soon be provided with good racecourses. The executive of the South Auckland RacingClub should know the value of the land. The granting of extra permits to racing clubs this season is likely to have good results for some people, in some parts of the Dominion, as it has led to clubs having “to pay through the nose’’ for racing properties or to seek for other courses. One settler we -could name has come out particularly well and has been well repaid for his generosity in letting a club race on his
property for some years gratis. There was no other available and suitable spot and the club had the option of taking it or going without a course.
