The Auckland Ladies’ Golf Club played the monthly medal at Middlemore on July 6th, in conditions which were not conducive to low scoring. The course was in good order, but a high north-westerly wind blew across the links, and made matters very trying for the players. In the senior division Miss K. Holmes, who has been playing very well lately, returned the best card, 113 —16 —97, and Miss M. Payton, 115 —16 —99, was second. The junior medal was won by Miss Jessie Reid, with a score of 117 —34—83. * * » ♦ Wellington. A large number of Wellington lady golfers have taken up ambulance and nursing work. Miss A. The course was in good order, and the game was closer than the score indicates. Miss Brewster won, 7up and 5 to play, and having won the cup on two previous occasions it now becomes her property. Mr. Walter Weston umpired for the match. « « * * Manawatu. The Manawatu Ladies’ Golf Club has renounced prizes for the current season, and the amount usually spent in club trophies, amounting to some £2O or more, is to be given, with the consent of the donors, to the fund for helping sick and wounded soldiers. The only trophies played for are the Red Cross medals, the entry fees for which go to the Red Cross Society, and the senior and junior local championships, for which there are challenge cups and the L.G.U. medals. ♦ C Dunedin. The Otago course was considerably altered at the beginning of the season, and it has been found necessary to make further alterations. Two of the new holes have been cut out temporarily, and one or two of the old holes taken up again. The new par for the ladles’ course will probably be 78 instead of 82. The championship of the St. Clair La'dies’ Golf Club was won by Miss N. Glendining, who played an excellent round in the final, defeating her opponent, Mrs. McCarthy, by 2 up and 1 to play. •T ♦ ♦ » Christchurch. Madge Neil Fraser Memorial Fund. The Madge- Neil Fraser Memorial Fund in England has reached (May 13th) the- sum of £1043 14s. lid. The English L.G.U. has sent out circulars to all clubs, both Home and colonial, asking for contributions to the fund. Any New Zealand clubs that wish to subscribe to it may send their donations through Mrs. Mellsop, lion, secretary for New Zealand, or direct to Mrs. E. N. Marshall, Queen Mary’s School, Walsall, England. If they send to the latter address cheques should be made payable to the “Madge Neil Fraser Memorial” and crossed Lloyd’s Bank. Miss V. Collins, twice lady golf champion of New Zealand, goes to India in August to be married.

OFFICIAL ORGAN OF THE NEW ZEALAND LADIES’ GOLF UNION.

Mrs. Ronald Orbell, of Oamaru, is leaving for England shortly, her husband, Dr. Orbell, having offered his services to the Home authorities. She is a very sterling player, and will be missed at the championship events.

A New Zealand golf enthusiast who has given his life for the Empire, the late Lance-Corporal Sole, writing from Egypt on April 2, says: “As I am just wonder’ng whether there is anything to add, I notice an officer returning with a kit of golf clubs. Although I have not had the opportunity of playing, I have had a look over the course at Heliopolis and a glimpse of the one at Gezira. The former appears the more popular, although there is not a blade of grass growing on it. The course forms part of the property of the Heliopolis Sporting Club, which also- has cricket, football (Soccer), polo, and. lawn tennis grounds, with a very handsome pavilion. The necessary equipment for a round is different from that required in New Zealand. Instead of golfing boots, players wear tennis shoes, as the ground is all carefully brushed, watered, and swept by a small army of Egyptian men and boys. Naturally the numerous sand bunkers are terrors. The ‘greens’ have no grass on them and appeared on the small side. A friendly player told me that one can get a long-carrying ball, but often one finds his ball rolling back into a bunker which will often cost several

strokes. The length of the course, if I remember rightly, was over 5300 yards and bogey 76—37 and 39. One never sees a sight like that to be seen at Waiwakaiho, where Mt. Egmont stands out supreme from the valley of the river. All here is sand, sand everywhere, with an occasional glimpse of the grim pyramids in the distance.”
