CANNIE CHIEL LODGE. (From Our Travelling Correspondent.) Situated at Fairlie on the tourist route to Mount Cook, is the stud farm of Mr. Hugh Kerr who for many years has been identified with the breeding of racehorses, trotters and Shire horses, some of the latter having gained many awards in the prize ring in the South Island. Some seven years back Mr. Kerr purchased Cannie Chiel (Clanranald —Weathereye) from Sir George Clifford, and from this well-known performer some promising horses are being prepared for racing purposes. Cannie Chiel is the sire of Winning Way, who has brought many successes to the Chokebore establishment, whilst some of his two-year-olds who will be racing next season, show great promise and bear some strikng galloping characteristics. Mr. Kerr has decided that Cannie Chiel will be at the service of breeders in the Waimate district next season, and this intimation will no doubt be welcome to breeders in those parts, as they will have an opportunity of having the services of one of the best racehorses that ever graced the New Zealand turf, and Mr. Kerr’s decision is sure to meet with the approval of all owners of well-bred mares in the Oamaru district.
In addition to Cannie Chiel, Mr. Kerr will have located at his place at Fairlie the Shire horse Boro Salesman who was imported from England by Mr. J. C. N. Grigg, of Longbeach, and the Clydesdale stallion Alexander the Great, by Alexander’s Heir —Lucy, by Sir William Wallace. Both horses are splendid specimens of the thoroughbred, and would win prizes in any show rings in New Zealand. With the three horses named Mr. Kerr should be kept very busy next season. Mr. Kerr also has on his . farm a pacing stallion by Bell Boy from Belle Symes, who has a record of 2min. 19sec. aga'nst him. This horse has already sired some capital trotters, and from indications some of his stock give promise of developing into ideal trotters. This sire’s prospects are held in high esteem by admirers of the light harness horse in South Canterbury.
