WELLINGTON.

Maliegarde’s Promising Form — Manawatu Trotting Club’s Approaching Gathering—Porirua Team for Wanganui—Mr. W. E. Bidwill’s Team at Rototawai.

(From our own correspondent.)

WELLINGTON, Monday

The filly Maltegarde, by Charlemagne II. —Annabelle, who was recently acquired by Mr. E. G. Malley, well-known as the owner of Merry Guy, continues to show some promise under Joe Scott’s guidance at Trentham. This three year-old, who gor amongst the winners at the Hawke's Bay meeting, should be repeating the performance in the near future T n parting with Maltegarde Mr. G. D. Greenwood had no doubt uppermost in his mind the great patience that Scott had bestowed upon Sutala, with the result that the latter may yet sufficiently recover from the accident that befell it at the W.R.C. summer meeting as to be able to race again. Certainly the three-year-old’s prospects are very bright indeed. The Manawatu Trotting Club ar? arranging for a meeting to take place on the Awapuni ra ecourse early next month. The officials of the club are noted for the thoroughness of their enthusiasm, and the gathering can be depended upon to be carried out in a very satisfactory manner. The granting of a totalisator permit to the club marks a new era in its progress, and its prospects in the future appear very rosy, for trotting has for many years held a high position amongst lovers of the light harness horse in the Manawatu.

Mr. H. Woolland, of Palmerston North, has leased Monologue and The Great Mogul to Mr. F. Martin, also of the same town. The two horses will as heretofore continue to be trained by T. George at Awapuni. Sir Donald, looking fit and well, is a daily attendant on the Awapuni tracks. The circus horse, as he is called from his peculiar markings, should certainly fare well in hurdle events to be decided during the remainder of this season, provided the weight assessors do not have too high an opinion of the chestnut’s ability.

Amongst the passengers that left for England by the s.s. Muritai, which left Wellington recently, was Mr. H. D. Vavasour, the popular president of the Marlborough Racing Club. He expects to be away from the Dominion for 12 months.

In Play-off and Zion, “Mr. F. Selwood” will have a couple of useful horses to carry his colours at Wanganui. The former, who is framed by T. Pine, at Hawera, is well forward, while P. Johnson, of New Plymouth, has Zion in rare trim. Mr. J. H. Prosser anticipates takinga team to the Wanganui meeting, and with horses of the galloping calibre of Goldstream (Gold Crest —The Sjhannon), George (Field Battery— Companion), Gold Soult (Gold Crest —Consuelo), Stepney (Achilles —Stepina) and Aratiatia (Achilles —Momokai) engaged there seems a reasonable prospect of some of the stake money being secured by horses hailing from the beach establishment. The whole team are well forward and they should certainly give a good account of themselves during the next few weeks.

F. Higgott, at Otaki, is fast getting Peroneal up to concert pitch, and there is just a probability that this mare will do her Wellington owner, Mr. W. Nidd, some useful service before the present racing season draws to a close.

Rose Pink, the Kilbroney—Madder filly, in C. Pritchard’s stable, at Trentham, continues to show some promise in her training work. A nice even youngster with undoubted breeding on her side she should ■prove useful to the local owner, “Mr. H. Whitney” during the term of her lease.

T. Lloyd, at Marton Junction, has Mr. W. Kain’s two steeplechasers Royal Medal (Sylvia Park —War M.edal) and Sportsman (Black and Red- —Crackshot mare) in capital trim in view of early engagements. The latter is nicely treated in the Wanganui Steeplechase with 9.9 opposite his name, but he will be up against some top notchers over the obstacles and he would have to be at his best to beat some of the heavier weighted division.

J. Sceats, at Woodville, has Zeus well forward, and all going well in the interim the son of Martian will be seen in action at Wanganui. Another win tor “Joe’s” stable would be very acceptable, and Ms turn may come in the near future. News from Foxton states that Moutoa Girl and Master Moutoa are doing well in their training essays, and should soon be carrying Mr. F. S. Easton’s colours in a creditable manner. The pair are destined to compete at. Wanganui. P. E. Hazleman, at Rototawai, is fast getting some of Mr. W. E. Bidwill s horses up .to concert pitch. Some of the young ones coming on give great promise, and on present appearances Mr. Bidwill will have some . capital types of gallopers to carry his popular colours in classical races next season.

The local cwp-er who races as. “H. V hitney” anticipates being represented at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s w'nter meeting. If the trip eventuates the ever-green Mount Victoria will be included in the team to race at Wingatui, while Roumania and Cyra may also go south. Vercnal, the Australian-bred filly, by Linacre —Totolo, owned by Mr. J. Paterson, who formerly raced Queen s Guard and other horses, is doing nicely under W. Garrett’s guidance at Opaki. The three-year-old figures in the lists for the Wanganui meeting, and provided she makes the trip she can be depended upon to give a good account of herself. Albert Goodman has Rene and Multoe looking in rare trim at Trentham. The pair give promise of repeating some of their Marlborough performances in the near future. Both horses can gallop fast, and should be heard of again shortly. Arthur Godfrey is still keeping Pink Heather up to the collar at Tauherenikau, and there seems a reasonable likelihood of this descendant of Birkenhead crediting Mr. G. Hume with some further successes during the the present racing season. Conziska. owned by Mr. E. P. Collerton, of Ti Nui, and trained by T. A. McCann, at Opaki, and who was thought unlucky “to miss the bus” at the Hawke's Bay meeting, is still showing good form on the local tracks. This six-year-old son of Conqueror is due for a win, and his turn may come shortly. The gelding should keep his opponents busy when he next faces the starter. • ’ The Levin trainer F. J. Carmont will have a useful team to represent his stable at the Otaki meeting, and it would occasion no surprise if a considerable portion of the stakes was annexed by horses hailing from his establishment. With a nice type of galloper to do battle for him Fred, should emerge from the conflict with some, of the spoils to the victors.

The gelding Bairnsdal,e by Bezonian—Sonoma, continues to show that he is gifted with galloping ability under Joe Ayer’s guidance at Trentham. The chestnut appears assured of a prosperous three-year-old careei’ next season, judging by his latest exploits on the training tracks at headquarters. Mr. E. Short’s steeplechaser Bonny, by St. Peter —Bonny Doon, continues to train on satisfactorily under Dick Edward’s guidance at Feilding. The gelding is a safe conveyance, and he can be depended upon to make a bold showing in jumping events at the Wanganui meeting. A win for the “Parorangi” sportsman would be nopularly • received in sporting circles.

Pall Mall, the full sister to Immer, does not appear to have lost any of her galloping powers as a result of her visit to the Marlborough meeting. She is training on very satisfactorily at Trentham, and should soon be catching the judge’s eye. C. Pritchard is quite sanguine that the Martian filly will be doing “Mr. Kirkdale” some useful service in the near future.

Deviation (Elevation — Wailethe) and Privation (Provocation — Te Kohi) are a couple of Mr. W. E. Bidwill’s gallopers that should gain many successes next season, judging by their exploits on the Rototawai private track. P. E. Hazlemann has in these two horses the preparation of something useful in the galloping line. -

Mr. C. F. Vallance’s three horses Nedra, Brainsfield and Amber and White continue to do well under J. Gravestock’s care at Clareville. These three bearers of the apple

green jacket and white sleeves and cap of the Masterton sportsman appear likely to win races before the close of the present season.
