TURF RESULTS.

MARLBOROUGH RACING CLUB. AUTUMN MEETING. DIAVOLO WINS THE CUP. The weather was raw and cold for the opening day of the Marlborough Racing Club’s autumn meeting on Wednesday. The attendance, however, was above the average B. Deeley was absent from the saddle owing to a slight attack of pneumonia. The totalisator investments totalled £9167, an increase of £1614 over the first day of last year. After the race for the Cup the stewards held an inquiry into the running of Rene, and a satisfactory explanation was forthcoming. The results were:— MAIDEN HACK HANDICAP of 75sovs. Six furlongs. 1 — G. Hume’s Pink Heather, 8.7 (W. O’Halloran) 1 3- —W. J. Mclnnes’ Achilleus, 8.7 (R. E. Brown) 2 2 — T. Septor’s British Rose, 8.7 (F. Langstone) 3 Also started. Pink Ribbon 8.7, Belgian Lass 8.7, Rienzi 8 7. The favourite led throughout, and won without being extended by a neck, the same distance separating second and third. Time, Imin 17 2-ssec. UGBROOKE WELTER (Open) of 100 sovs. Seven furlongs. 1 — A. McDonald’s Montana, 8.4 (W. O’Halloran) 1 2 — Sir Jas. Carroll’s Want, 8.12 (M. McDonald) 2 3 — W. Mclnnes’ Achilledes, 9.10 E. Brown) 3 Also started; Curator 9 10, Waipunui 8.12 Beacon 8.7. Waipunui went off with the lead, then Beacon and Want too up the running; later Montana came out and won easily by half a length, a similar distance separating second and third. Royal Sleeves and Multoe were prominent in the early stages, but on coming into the straight Excitement went to the front, and won comfortably by a length, a length separating second and tnird. Time, Imin 4sec. MARLBOROUGH CUP (Open) of 250 sovs. One mile and a-quarttr. 3 —P. P. Neagle’s Diavolo, 7.12 (J. O’Shea) 1 1— A. poJodmanls Rene, 8.5 (H. Lowe) 2 C—Mr Kirkdale’s Immer, 8.7 (W. O’Halloran) 3 Also started: Byron 9 0, Imarose 8.3, Chillies 7.2. Diavolo went off with the lead, and never lost it. At the first turn Rene received a nasty bump. At the back of the course the field closed up, but Diavclo was still in command. Rene made an effort to catch up, but was unsuccessful, Diavolo winning by a clear length. Immer was half a length behind Rene. Time, 2min llsec. OPAWA WELTER HANDICAP of 100 sovs. Seven furlongs. 6 — C. P. Nash’s Ruapara, 8.4 (E, Manson) 1 3 —Goodman and Burgess’ Hap Dda, 9.2 (H. Lowe) 2 2 — J. T. Murphy’s Roue, 8.11 (F. Porter) 3 Also started: Arlington 9.9, Combination 8.8, Elopement 86. Soporific 86, Ofakura 8.3.

Arlington did most of the leading, with Roue close in attendance. In the .straight Ruapara and Hap Dda came quickly, and after an exciting race Ruapara won by a short neck, with Roue a neck behind Hap Dda. Time, Imin 30sec. FLYING HANDICAP of 125sovs. Six furlongs. 1 — P. P. Neagle’s Evadne, 7.11 (J. O’Shea) 1 4 — J. J. Corry’s Margarita, 7.4 (R Reed) 2 2— A. Harris' Altcar. 5.13 (M. McDonald) 3 Also started: Peroneal 8.6, Royal Dragoon 86. Evadne led practically all the way. Margarita challenged on the rails, bul this was staved off, and Evadne won by half a length. Time, Imin 15 2-5 sec. Second place was awarded Altcar owing to Margarita boring in the straight. AUTUMN HACK HANDICAP of 100 sovs. Six furlongs. 3— J. Wilson’s Whisperer, 8.0 (J. O’Shea) 1 5— J. Fuller’s Royal Sleeves, 8.3 (R. Reed) 2 2 —II. W. Johnston’s Coropet, 7 5 (O. McCarten) 3 Also started: Haumakaka 9.0, Arlington 8.7, Killaloo 7.8%. Royal Sleeves headed the field until the straight was reached, when Whisoerer came through and won by a short length. Time, Imin 15 3-ssec. CONCLUDING DAY. RENE WINS THE PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. There were improved conditions for the second day of the meeting on Thursday, and there was a large crowd present. ‘ The amount put. through the totalisator was £9778, the total for the two days being £18,945. against £15,298 last year. SCURRY HACK HANDICAP of 65sovs. Four furlongs. 2— H. W- Johnston’s Coropet, 8.7 (O. McCarten) 1 1— —Mr. Kirkdale’s Pall Mall, 7.7 (R. Reed) 2 3 — G. Bruces viaainess, 8.7 (a. Oliver) 3 Also started: British Rose 8.7, Pink Ribbon 8.7, Nancyform 8.7, Warstrain 7.7, Martial Air 7.7, Belgian Lass. Belgian Lass was left behind at the post. C'oropet asserted himself in the straight, and won by a short length. Time, 51 sec. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP (Open) of lOOsovs. Six furlongs. 3—F. Martin’s Powder Fox, 7.10 (E. Manson) 1 2— P. P. Neagle’s Evadne, 8.10 (J. O’Shea) 2 I—A. Harris’ Altcar, 9.0 (M. McDonald) 3 Also started: Curator 8.9, Royal Dragoon 8.9. Powder Fox led all the way and won by a length. The other horses were close together. Time, Imin 16sec. OMAKA WELTER HANDICAP of 100 sovs. Seven furlongs. 1— J. T. Murphy’s Roue, 8.11 (F. Porter) 1 3 — J. S. Adams’ Arlington, 9.7 (R. Hatch) 2 2 — Goodman and Burgess’ Hap Dda, 9.7 (R. E. Brown) 3 Also started: Raupara 9.0, Soporific 8 11, Rienzie 7.12. The favourite secured the advantage at the start, and maintained it till the turn into the. straight, when Hap Dda passed to the front. Arlington was handy, but Roue, well ridden, recovered the ground, and fought out the finish winning by a short neck, Hap Dda a neck behind Arlington. Time, Imin 30sec.

PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP (Open) of 175sovs. One mile and a distance. 1 — J. A. Goodman’s Rene, 8.11 (H. Lowe) • 1 3 —W. Mclnnes’ Achilledes, 8.0 (R. E. Brown) 2 2 — P. P. Neagle’s Diavolo, 8.11 (J. O’Shea) 3 Also started: Byron 9.0, Immer 8.9, Imarose 8.1, Monologue 77, Peroneal 7 3, Margarita 6.13. From a perfect start Margarita led off, and remained in front all the way round. Achilledes was well in the rear. On turning for home Achilledes made a wonderful recovery, but could not head Rene, who won by a short head. Margarita ran off on the rails Time. Imin 58scc.
