The imported horse Land of Song, who has won several races since arriving in Australia, and who was thought to have a fair chance of picking up some of the w.f.a. events, has unfortunately developed lameness. Mr. W. Walters advertises his stud horses this week, and in dong so sets out their pedigrees in tabular form, so that the different lines of descent can be traced by those who make a study of breeding. 1t * * “Stuart” Waddell had his charges in rattling good condition for the Ellerslie gathering, capturing a double with Hoy, and a win apiece with Hyginas and Centre, the victories being well received by the public.

In seven years the Australian Jockey Club more than doubled their added money in connection with their autumn fixture. The total stake money for the autumn meeting now being decided, extending over four days and consisting of 24 races, amounts to the handsome sum of £30,450. What will the Club give away in stakes when they run the tote?

The Great Northern Champagne Stakes was a very disappointing finish to witness. It was contended that the event would resolve itself into a duel between Arran and Desert Gold, but the latter, as the result of contracting a cold since her arrival at Ellerslie, displayed none of her old-time vigour and vim in the straight, being manifestly much below her best form. This was hard luck for painstakingtrainer F. Davis.

James Buchanan was the hero of the afternoon on the opening day of the Easter gathering at Ellerslie, steering Royal Irish, Arran, Merry Roe, Hyginas and Hoy to victory—a rather remarkable performance, considering 104 horses started in the eight events carded.

On the opening day of the Auckland autumn meeting there was nothing in the way of a sensation in dividends, though both Goldsize and Goldfire paid remunerative second prices. The latter had been doing very little fast work on the track, and taking a line through Saturday’s running he does not require a severe preparation.

While Ventura and Downham were doing their best to pick up some of the rich crumbs at the A.R.C. meeting unsuccessfully, Mr. E. J. Watt’s fine colt Mountain Knight, by Mountain King—La Vedle, was evening up matters for the Hawke’s Bay sportsman by capturing the A.J.C. St. Leger, of lOOOsovs.

T. A. Williams, the ex-Auckland trainer, turned out the winner of the Park Handicap at the Hawkesbury meeting named Grab Apple, by Grafton — Xpplewoman, which was favourite at 3 to 1. At the same meeting Garlin, with 9.5 in the saddle, skipped over a mile in lmin. 39sec. in the Highweight Handicap, and subsequently carried off the A.J.C. Doncaster Handicap. Garlin cost Mr. J. Wren £2OOO.
