WAIPUKURAU JOCKEY CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. SIR ALBA WINS WAIPUKURAU HANDICAP. (By Telegraph—Napier Correspondent.) NAPIER, Monday. The Waipukurau Jockey Club’s annual race meeting, which has for some years ranked as the most important one-day meeting in the Dominion, was held to-day. The day was fine, and the attendance of the public was large. The courteous and energetic secretary, Mr. W. G. Nightingale, who has been on the sick list for the past three weeks or so, was in his accustomed place, and the meeting was run with that smoothness and success which the public have now become accustomed to at this gathering. It seemed quite impossible to think of anything which could conduce to the comfort and convenience of racegoers and owners which had not been thought of and provided for, and the meeting, as it always does, deserves to take its place as one of the most admirably conducted race meetings in the Dominion. The Club was giving away £1625 in stake money, which is, I fancy, a record for New Zealand for a one-day club. The fields were much larger than usual, and the. racing was first-class.

Owing to the absence of Mr. A. G. Wood at Riccarion, Mr. Angus Keith officiated as starter, and his sends-off were indifferent, there being a lot of delay at the post in several of the races, which put backers in a bad humour. The course was in good order. The totalisator figures showed that £16,430 had been put through the machine, which is an increase on last year’s total of £l3Ol. The results were: — MAIDEN PLATE of 105sovs. Seven furlongs. 5— Mysterium. 5.12 1 9 —True Gun. 8.11 2 3 — King’s Guard, 8.11 3 Also started: 8 Multipare. 11 Whetukura, 7 Miss Percy, 10 Municipal. 6 Royal Favourite, 1 Stonier, 4 Hygia, 2 Maricia. Time, lmin 16sec. Stonier was favourite for the Maiden Plate, but ran a bad race, Mysterium, one of the outside division, winning handily from a still greater outsider in True Gun, an Australian-bred gelding by Siege Gun —Noella. Allen Doone was most fancied for the Easter Handicap, and he won with something to spare from Cererules. Alces and Janitor were both pretty warm for the Hack Handicap, but the issue was fought out between Sensitive and No Idea, the former winning by half a length.

Sir Alba easily landed the odds laid on him in the Waipukurau Handicap, Settler being his nearest attendant at the finish. The speedy Gold Foil was second favourite for the Two-year-old Handicap, Asterias being next in demand, but Gvld Foil landed the stake by a very narrow margin from the bigger outsider Trials, a finelooking brown gelding by Tribulation —Pauline. Diavolo was the best of good things for the Ladies’ Handicap, and he won easily from Miriam. Admiral Beatty and Mandoline was the order of the betting for the Hatuma Hack Handicap, but the topweight Multiplicity beat Admiral Beatty by half a length at the finish of a good race. Indigo and Allen Doone were the principal selections for the Flying Handicap, but Golden Sky, getting a flying start, was prominent, all the way, and won by half a length from Allen Doone.
