BLAGUE, THE NEWMARKET HANDICAP WINNER.
Blague, winner of the Newmarket Handicap, like many another misjudged equine, was regarded as not likely to stay when he raced at two years old, but his placed performances show that he has this year won three times over a mile and once over seven furlongs before he won the Newmarket Handicap, his first six furlong victory. He is bred to stay, however, being by Bobadil, son of Bill of Portland and She, Stepniak’s sister, from Circle, half sister to Naxbery, by Carbine from Yardley, a daughter of Sterling, whose great granddam, Pasguimade, was a sister to Touchstone. Through Nordenfeldt and Carbine the Musket blood is nicely balanced in his pedigree and the Sterling - Oxford double cross brings in Birdcatcher, who also got Saunterer, the sire of Steppe. “Mr. S. A. Rawdon,” owner of Blague, bred him, having purchased Circle, who was then carrying Blague, in March, 1911, for 160 guineas. As Blague has won £6255 in stakes made up in
seven wins, a second and two thirds, the purchase was a good one. Blague had started in 17 races when he won the big Australian six furlongs handicap.
