WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING. CUP WON BY MASTER LUPIN, FLYING BY TREE LUCERNE. The Wanganui Jockey Club’s autumn meeting has never been more largely attended than that which was held last Thursday and Saturday. The fields averaged fairly well all through and the course was in good order fo rtime making, and some of the performances were of the record order for time making, and some of them, that registered in the Cup by Master Lupin for the mile and therequarters, viz., 3min. 0 3-ssec., was a Dominion record. The sum of £27,166 10s. was handled at the totalisators on the opening day, being an increase of £259 over the corresponding day last year, and on the second day reached to £29,991 10s., making £57,158 for the two days, as against £58,191 for the two days last year. There was some good racing, and Mr. Skipwith, the starter, was in good form wth the barrier, getting nearly all the horses away well. There were exceptions, however, as there will always be while there are so many lightweights riding and so many unruly horses.

Fair Rosamond was a much better favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap than Banksia and Princess Moutoa, who were equally supported, a little more so than Ladoga. The last-named came with a good run and settled Astor easily by a neck, with Invader, Banksia and Fair Rosamond next. Fair Rosamond, on the outside of her field all the way, did not get a good run, and Banksia met with some of the bad luck in running. The best at the weights won, and would win again. Goldstream was the favourite for the Petre Hack Handicap, but neither he nor Miraculous got off too well. Avon Park was too good for New York and Marimba in the run home, and the Hawera mare, who was an outsider, paid the best dividend of the day. The Westmere Hand cap Hurd'e Race was closely contested and was won by the favourite, Styrax, Leapuki racing himself out and finishing very tired, old Flingot also Leat'ng him in the run home. Kew was in front nearly all the way in the Tayforth Hack Hurdles and easly beat Kaupata (the favourite), St. Gate and Tirohanga.

The Wanganui Cup attracted only nine starters, and Indigo was made favourite, Rewi Poto, Kilrain and Rinaldo, in the order their names appeared on the card, next in order. Save that Rewi Poto sweated freely, as he always does, and Indigo also seemed soft, there was nothing specially noticeable about the horses as they left the paddock. It was an uninteresting race, as Master Lupin, who next to Chaminade was the least supported, was out in front all the

way, and making time over every furlong until he eventually won by several lengths comfortably in the record time of 3.0 3-5 from Rinaldo, who was several lengths ahead of Kilrain, after whom came the favourite, Indigo, and Rewi Poto in procession. Master Lupin had done a good mile and a quarter gallop for his trainer and was well supported by followers of the stable. He was bred by Mr. G. F. Moore, of Bushy Park, and is from the family which gave us Renown. St. Lyra, his dam, was bred at Sylvia Park. H. Young rode him well, keeping close in to the rails.

The Juvenile Handicap was between Tirana, a son of Coronet, and Blackheart, a son of All Black, and the firstnamed stuck to his task best, the rest of the 'field being of no use to the three-year-olds, Eligible proving the best of them, but as apprentices were on all the starters where experience was required it is possible that the two-year-olds were not seen to the best advantage. Austin was perhaps lucky that Quo Vadis did not get away too well, or he might not have won the Wiritoa Hack Race, in which the pair were nearly equally supported for first favouritism. Patronymic carried top weight (21b. more than Austin) into third place and was close up. Just when Silver Flood was expected to take a hand in the run down the straight he broke a leg at the bend and had to be shot. The nicelytreated but in-and-out Postillion was made favourite for the Flying Handicap, Ardent, in the same stable, beingnext in request, Grattan, Emperador and Tree Lucerne having most friends of the other eleven starters. Tree Lucerne never gave anything a look in at the business end, where Postillion got up and beat Emperador, Ineuru and Ardent in the home run, and many thought that he was unlucky not to catch Tree Lucerne, who is a better horse than has been supposed.
