MOTOR NOTES.

Mr. S. Kidman, the Cattls King of Australia, has recently made a motor journey of 4000 miles, and reports that both in New South Wales and parts of Queensland drought was being experienced in a greater or lesser degree.

The general manager of D. Napier and Sons' Ltd. is offering employment to all suitable Belgian refugees in England, who have had motor-car constructional experience. Those required are turners, smelters, drillers', men used to capstan lathes, grinders, and toolmakers.

With the object of demonstrating the efficiency of air cooling for motorcar engines, the Franklins Automobile Co., of Syracuse, N.Y., U.S.A., is organising a 100 miles non-stop test to made entirely on the low speed by all the agents for Franklin cars throughout the United States on one certain day.

It is stated that the war has done the cycle trade in England a good turn. One firm is supplying the Belgian, French and Russians with from 200 to 300 cycles a fortnight.

At the last meeting of the executive of the Wairarapa Automobile Association, a member introduced the subject of a telephone on the Rimutaka Road hill. He said it would be of great use to motorists who travel over the hill in case of accident or running short of petrol. The cost, he thought, would be at the rate of £25 a mile, a probable total cost of £l5O to the top of the hill.

Brick roads are being used with success in some parts of the United States and although exceedingly expensive in the first place, have proved most economical on account of their extraordinarily long life, ft is said that such roads will last for upwards of twenty years, and cost very little to maintain.
