Peary, the winner of the Great Northern Steeplechase, is well bred, and. takes some of his goodness from his dam, Norsemaid, who is by Nordenfeldt, from Maid of Athol, from Sappho, the ancestress of so many good ones in the Australasian colonies. He is perhaps the best by Birkenhead that his dam has left. The win was due to the Hon. J. D. Ormond, his breeder, who had the bad luck to lose Napper when that gelding broke his leg when all over a winner in 1912. The Fisher Stakes, recently run at Morphettville, when the South Australian Jockey Club’s autumn meeting concluded, has been remarkable in the past for the big dividends paid by winners. Braw Scot, who won in 1912, paid only £4 17s, but Phormio paid £l3 19s for second. A few of the dividends paid since it changed into a handicap in 1898 are: —18.98, Eleusinian, £2B 19s; 1899, Goodwill, £2B 15s; 1900, Martagan, £67.85; 1902, Lome, £6l 18s; 1904, Barr, £2l 12s; 1905, Masher, £l5 16s; 1906, Spinaway, £lO 13s; 1909, Fict on, £2l 12s; 1912, Phormio (second), £l3 19s. This year’s event was won by Bective, by Sir Alwyne (sire of Sir Alwynton, winner of the Newcastle Cup), who returned a dividend of £4.
