OTAGO LADIES’ GOLF CLUB. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Otago Ladies’ Golf Club commenced their annual Open Tournament on the local links on Wednesday, April 22nd. There was a large entry, which included golfers from Christchurch, Oamaru, St. Clair and Invercargill. Although the weather was fine, the rain the previous day made the links heavy, and this kept the scores . high. The following are the results of the first Qualifiying Rounds. —Mrs. McCarthy, morning 95, afternoon 92, total 187; Miss K. Rattray (Otago), 96 — 98 —194; Miss Theonmin (Otago), 98 —97 —195; Mrs. Orbell (Oamaru), 99 —97—196; Miss Fisher (Christchurch), 102—94 —196; Mrs. Sargood (Otago), 98 —101 —199; Mrs. Cohn (Otago), 102 —106 —208; Mrs. Allan (Otago), 103 —106 —209: Mrs. Rattray (Otago), 102 —107—209. Owing to playing from the men’s tee at the Gorge, Mrs. Buckley (Oamaru), with scores of 96 and 104, was disqualified. Mrs. Rattray and Mrs. Allan, who tied for the eighth place, played four holes to decide and Mrs. Allan won the tie. A prize (presented by Mrs. W. A. Young) for the best score was won by Mrs. McCarthy. In conjunction with the first qualifying round, the Misses Mills’ Challenge Cup (handicap limit 24) was played, and won by Mrs. Sargood. On the final day the weather was beautiful and the links in splendid condition. In the morning the semifinals of the championship were decided. A Flag Match was played off in the afternoon. The Flag Match was a very popular event, and much enjoyed by all present. The prize presented by the captain (Mrs. C. Rattray) was won by Miss N. Glendining with a score of 102, who finished in the 18th hole; Mrs. Sargood was second and finished in the 17th hole. In the afternoon the final of the championship was decided, and Mrs. Orbell beat Mrs. Allan, 1 up. The Four-ball Bogey Handicap was as follows: —Mrs. Buckley and Mrs. Sargood, 3 up; Miss N. Glendining and Miss M. Law, 1 up; Miss Cowlishaw and Miss Fisher, 2 clown; Mrs. Rattray and Mrs. Donald, 2 down; Mrs. Black and Miss I. Rattray, 2 down; Mrs. Dodgshun and Miss Theomin, 4 down.

In the Putting Competitions the following ladies scored: Mrs. Mackie (Wednesday), Miss Cowlishaw (Thursday), Mrs. Ogston (Friday). At the conclusion of the final play, Mrs. Bullock (captain of the Men’s Club) with Mrs. C. Rattray (ladies’ captain) presented the trophies. Mrs. Cohn entertained the players and visitors at Lea.

The final of the Otago Ladies’ Club open championship was won by Mrs. Ronald Orbell, of Oamaru, who beat Mrs. Allan by one up.

At a competition held by the Christchurch Club Miss F. Moore won the Flag Competition. Mrs. Cripps was runner-up. Prizes for the event were presented by Mrs. Pyne.

The Hamilton Ladies’ Golf Club medal competition, which took place cn April 28th, resulted as follows: — Mrs. W. H. Hume, 120 —34—86; Mrs. Douglas, 120 —30 —90; Airs. King, 139 —40 —99; Miss Wilkinson, 129 —30 — 99; Miss Cussen, 129 —24 —105.

The Dargaville Golf Club opened their season on April 25th, and were favoured with splendid weather. There was a very fair gathering present, and afternoon tea was ably dispensed by some of the ladies present. A mixed foursome was played for trophies presented by Mr. E. T. Tate.

The highest nett scores were: —Miss Atkinson and Mr. Tate, 64 —15 —49; Miss Forest and Mr. Wilson, 79 —20— 59; Miss Gavey and Mr. Mathias, 73 — 13 —60; Miss Horton and Mr. Dargaville, 78—15—63; Miss Closs and Air. Pearson, 85—20 —65; Airs. Dargaville and Mr. Mason, 92—15--77.

The New Plymouth Golf Club played the first round of the Edmunds medal competition for silver and bronze medallists on April 28. A strong south-easterly wind prevented good scores. The following are the best seven:—.Miss Coutts, 114—21 — 93; Miss Read, 118—24—94; Miss Brewster, 108—11—97; Airs. Glenn, 111 —14—97; Miss Rundle, 109 —11 — 98; Mrs. Phton, 113—15 —98; Mrs. Johns, 119 —21—98.

On April 2 3rd the fi(rst “.flag'” match to be played in New Plymouth took place at Waiwakaiho, and proved quite an enjoyable game. Two of the first foursomes to get away reached the 17th green and planted flags, the winners eventually sighting the flags from their drives from the 17th tee with five strokes in hand. They holed the 17th in 5, and so had the drive from the 18th. This makes quite an interesting- game from a spectator’s point of view, and for future matches the committee might add a third to all handicaps, to, it possible, ensure a finish at the I’sth or 19th hole.

A writer in the “Taranaki Herald” hopes that the New Plymouth Club will make an effort to retain the services of McCormick next year for the whole of the season, as his services would still be available for other Taranaki clubs. With a professional with

headquarters in New Plymouth and tiiways available, local players would rind that they would quickly improve their game. A retaining fee would be necessary, and the committee might well see what support members would be prepared to give the scheme. The club membership would benefit and generally the status of the club would be raised.

The Patea Golf Club (Taranaki) held its opening day on April 25th, when the utmost keenness in the game was displayed by all present, and a good season is confidently looked forward to by all members. Appreciation was expressed of the commodious new golf house, which will undoubtedly prove a boon to members during the season.

The ladies of the Richmond Hill Golf Club, Christchurch, played a medal match on April 25th for Mrs. Pratt’s prize. The Wellington players who visited New Plymouth and played at the Waiwakaiho Links Easter tournament, all agree that the links are excellent, and say that in a year or two New Plymouth will be the best place in New Zealand for golfers to go for Easter.

The Pahiatua Golf Club opened its season on the 24th of April. There was a large gathering af visitors, who were entertained at afternoon tea in the club’s pavilion by Mrs. G. H. smith, wife of the president of tne club.

The Manawatu Ladies’ Golf Club neld their first monthly medal match on Tuesday last. The results were as follows:—A grade: Mrs. Innes, 103 — 24— 79; Mrs. Mellsop, 102 —20 —B2; Mrs. L. Seifert, 104—21—83. —B2; Mrs. L. Seifert, 104 —21—83; B. grade: Mrs. Millton, 135 —31—104. Juniors: Mrs. Holmes, 125 —4 —121; Miss Hewett, 127 —4 —123.

There was a large attendance of ladies at the medal competition held on the Gisborne Links on April 25th. A medal match figured on the card, and a large number of male players set out with hopes high burning to bring in a record score. But the yawning sand bunkers, the fences, the trees, the ferns, and the dozen and one pitfalls that lie in wait for the hapless player on medal days, were all present, and there seemed to be more of them than usual. August Baku was the winner, and afternoon tea was supplied by Mesdames O’Meara and Barlow and Miss Whiteley.

Members of the Dannevirke Golf Club held their annual meeting on April 28th. Thirteen new members were elected. The season’s receipts exceeded the expenditure by £l2 Is. 10d., and the club has now a credit balance at the bank of £6l>r2s. . The liabilities are nil, and the assets as disclosed by the balance-sheet are £74 2s. Last season was opened on 23rd April, and closed on 27th October. Members on both occasions were hospitably entertained by Mrs. W. F. Knight, The winners of the principal club events were: —Ladies: Championship, Miss Hartgill; Mr. W. F.
