WELLINGTON.

Masterton Cup Prospects—Juveniles Recently Purchased by Mr. H. Gaisford Now Under J. Prosser’s Guidance—Notes on Masterton Candidates — The Marlborough R.C.’s Fixture.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

WELLINGTON, March 23.

Everything is well forward for the Autumn meeting of the Masterton Racing Club, which takes place on April 2nd and 3rd. With excellent fields competing the gathering promises to prove very successful. Bertrada, with 7st 101 b opposite her name, reads well in the Masterton Cup. The daughter of Charlemagne II —Couronne has not so far been seen in a race over a distance, but if all one hears is true the “Highden” representative is sure to give a good account of herself.

Kooya would only need to be reasonably well to give an excellent display in the Masterton Cup. The fiily won the principal Woodville event, leaving the mile and a-quarter behind in 2min 8 l-sseic, and she followed this up by winning the Dannevirke Cup of a mile and a-half in 2min 35sec. D. Kemp’s capital galloper should certainly pay expenses on the Masterton trip. M McDonald and W. Ayre, who have been enjoying a holiday in Nelson since the Richmond meeting, returned

to Wellington on Saturday last. Both riders have some impor ant engagements to fulfil at Masterton. Immer is hitting out in quite an attractive style on the Trentham tracks. The Martian filly should soon be doing her Wellington owner some useful service.

H. Kingjan is busy at Trentham with Big Blast, who should soon be getting on the winning list. The mare is down to compete at the Masterton gathering. Mr. W- Smart, one of our local owners, will be represented at Mastericn with Merry Frank, Amity, and Big Blast. The two former are reported well forward, while the daughter of Quarryman is coming on with' every gallop. The report that the railway authorities have given orders that all horse boxes are to be thoroughly? f migated before using will be welcome news to owners and who, on many occasions, have had a real grievance owing to the unclean state of the transit boxes. The step that has been recently taken is one that should have been put in hand years ago.

The youngsters (five) that were purchased recently by Mr. Henry Gaisford, of Dannevirke, have all been put through their preliminary facings by Mr. J. H- Prosser at Porirua. They are an even lot, and what galloping powers they possess should be revealed under the tuition of the Porirua trainer.

Manitau, who had a good field behind her when she scored at Dannevirke on March sth, looks well in

in the Opaki Welter at Masterton. The mare has the same identical weight (7.13) to carry at Opaki that the triumphed under at Dannevirke. Under the circumstances the daughter of San Fran may be worth keeping in mind.

J. Cress, the Trentham bonifacet trainer, is taking Otiakura and Elevated to Masterton, where the pair should run respectably in their several contests. Both horses are acquitting themselves well on the local tranks.

J. W. Lowe has all his boxes fully tenanted at Trentham, and was recently obliged to refuse some more additions to his already long string. It will be good news to “Jack’s” many friends to know he has had a very fair measuie of success during the present season. The Downshire —Happy Valley filly belonging to Mr. H. R- Gaisford, who is being prepared for her racing career by Mr. J. H. Prosser at Porirua, is highly spoken of by those who have seen her galloping on the beach. If appearances count for anything, she is assured of a prosperous career.

Pavlova and Gipsy Belle, both of whom will probably be seen in action at the Auckland R.C- Easter meeting, are doing well at Porirua. The pair should be in capital trim by the time the big Ellerslie fixture comes up for decision.

Lady Dalesford contnues to show trainer H. W. Clay some nice gallops at Trentham. The chestnut mare will be seen out in scurry events at the Masterton meeting.

The president and committee of the Marlborough Racing Club have issued an invitation to owners, trainers and racegoers to attend their Autumn meeting, which takes place on the 6th and 7th May. The gathering is always looked forward to with racegoers on this side of Cook Strait, and the coming fixture promises to be no exception to the general rule- Nominations for all events close on April 14th with Mr. Griffiths at Blenheim.

T. Phillips is slipping some solid Work into Top Note (San Fran —Lady Bevys) at Masterton. The brown mare, who has improved out of all knowledge, will be seen competing at the approaching local meeting. Caretaker W. Conkey has the grounds, tracks, and appointments of the Masterton Racing Club’s property at Opaki looking at their very best at present. Visitors to the Autumn meeting, which takes place on April 2nd and 3rd, will appreciate the efforts of th club, who have catered for their requirements on a lavish scale.

The Field Battery—St- Winifred mare, Holywell, belonging to Mr. F. Armstrong of Akiteo 1 , who is being trained by J. W. Lowe, is quite an aristrccratic member of the racing brigade. The youngster, who is a four-year-old, should carry her popular owner’s colours with some success during the next few months. M. McDonald, who was associated with Lady Vladimir’s success at Nelson, will again have the mount on the chestnut m|are at Masterton. She will be opposed by some “smarties” next week, and will have to be at her best if she is to reproduce her Richmond Park form-

Arlington and Ladoga, both of whom gained many admirers by their, exertions at the Napier Park meeting,’ are again safely back at J. Ayers’ stable at Trentham. The pair appear susceptible of repeating their recent performances in the near future. “Joe’s” many friends were to hear of his success at Greenmeadcws.

Bonus is being kept up to the collar by -W. Galbraith at Featherston. The son of Advance will be seen measuring strides at. the Masterto.i gathering. In Lady Laddoi and Ladif/ the Levin stable of F. J Carmont is WeljL i epresented at the Masterton meeting. The pair have some excellent credentials to their credit, and with luck on their side should assuredly fare well in their next week's engagements.

Hoopoe continues to show improved form under Mr. Prosser’s guidance at Porirua. The three-year-old chestnut 1 lly by Achilles should soon be seen under favourable circumstances

Miss Lena is credited with having executed a smart gallop recently. The bay mare showed some pace to the tarn at Dannevirke, which proves that she is coming on w,ell. It is

quite within the realms of probability that she should do he? Wellington owner, Mr. D Salliv/an, some goo 1 service at Masterton.
