TE AROHA JOCKEY CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. FIRST DAY. (From our own Correspondent.) TE AROHA, March 7. There was glorious weather and a large attendance of sporting enthusiasts at the first day’s fixture of the the Te Aroha Jockey Club’s annual meeting, that took place to-day, visitors being present from all parts of the country, while a big contingent from Auckland helped to swell the numbers. Owing to the fine weather experienced recently the tracks were somewhat on the hard side, and in consequence some smart times were recorded. Gloy who was a warm favourite, had no difficulty in winning the Cup, the son of Gluten finishing up his task in a resolute manner. Two rank outsiders in Try Fluke and Marangai won during the afternoon, and the devidends paid by them were something to remember. Mr. A. Gordon, stipendiary steward, was in attendance, and with the exception of a few minor inquiries there was nothing serious to engage that official’s attention. Mr. O’Connor, who was in charge of the barrier, quite exceeded the patience of racegoers by the long and tedious delays that took place at the starting post, and, in consequence, the last race was run over an hour behind time. Visitors came well provided with the sinews of war, for at the close of the afternoon it was ascertained that the totalisator staff had dealt with £11,473. compared with £6466 for the corresponding day last year. The handicapping of Mr. F. W. Edwards came ’in for favourable criticism, owing to the excellent finishes provided, while Mr. James McNicol made an admirable judge, his decisions beinghoisted promptly and accurately. The results were:— RUAKAKA HANDICAP HURDLES of 70sovs; second lOsovs, third ssovs from the stake. One mile and a-milf. 4—C. Potier’s b g Rapid, by Captain Webb — Insomnia mare, 9.0 (3. Going round the back the positions were the same with the exception that Gloy had made a move to get up in front. The latter was in charge when heads were turned for home.. A little further on Tinopai joined Gloy and a battle royal ensued to the winning-'post, when the latter gafned the verdict by half a length, with Lady Elgiva three lengths away third. Coming into the straight Tattoo went to the front, and stalling off a strong challenge by Munster won by threeparts of a length, with Kotiripo a length away third. Ruse de Guerre was fourth. Time Imin 3 2-ssec. (Winner trained by J. Winder.) SECOND DAY. Climatic conditions were again perfect for the second day of the gathering. which was brought to a conclusion on Tuesday last in the presence of a large number of spectators. The racing again was very interesting, some excellent contests being fought out, the verdicts in some instances being in doubt right up to the time the winning line was crossed. There were again some tedious delays at the starting post, the last race being run considerably behind time, which made it very inconvenient for people who had to catch their trains. The appointments on the course are totally inadequate, and it is good news to learn that the club have in contemplation a scheme for the carrying out of some very necessary additions to their present buildings. The work of the governing official of the- club (Mr. George J. Parker) wa= carried out in an able manner, and he proved, by his attention to details connected with the meeting, that he bad a thorough grip of all matters ap-ne-taining to racing. An unfortunate accident occurred in the Aroha Welter, whereby Watchcl'ain "nd Admiral Soult fell and luckilv both the horses’ pilots escaped with only a severe shaking. The totalisator arrangements, wh’cb were in charge of Mr. C. F. Mark, of Auckland, gave •,splendid satisfaction, there being nothing but admiration for the excellent manner in wlrch everything in the money department passed off. The sum of £11.064 10s. was handled bv the totalisator staff, against £732? that was dealt with on the corresponding day last year, making a total for the meeting of £22,537 10s., compared

with £13,788 that found its way through the machine at the annual meeting in 1913. Results:— MANAWARU HURDLES of 70sovs; second lOsovs, third ssovs from stake. One mile and three-quarters, 4— H. R. Icel was fourth. Time, 3min 32 3-ssec. There was a hostile demonstration against the winner on returning to scale and pandemonium reigned for a time.
