EXHIBITION NOTES.

The band contests held in conjunction with the Exhibition drew twentynine bands to Auckland. The contests opened on Monday, February 9, and on Wednesday an official welcome was given to the visiting bandsmen by the Mayor. (Mr. C. J. Piarr) and the president of the Exhibition Mr. G. Elliot). The following bands were present:—Wanganui Garrison, Marton Royal, and Queen Alexandra’s Own, Waihi, Whangarei, Wellington Waterside Workers, Hawera, Taranaki Riflles, St. Kilda, Kaikoral, Napier City, 16th Waikato Regiment, Dargaville Town, and Invercargill Hibernian Bands. Tea was served after the ceremony and selections rendered by the bands present, who gave a very enjoyable afternoon to the crowds in attendance.

The Auckland Exhibition demonstration for fire brigades opened and continued in splendid weather. Entries to the number of 145 were received for the seven events, and among the visiting brigades which took part were the South Dunedin, winners of the Otago Provincial Shield, Dannevirke, Hawera, Petone Railway, Napier Railway, Taumar.inut, and Gisborne Brigades. The Auckland United First Brigades’ Association, supported by the Exhibition authorities, offered prize-money to the value of about £l5O.

An application has been made by the Exhibition executive to the Government for an extension of time for two months with power to close at any date. The chairman explained to the executive that the Government had refused, when the previous application was made, to grant an extension giving the executive power to close at any time during the period, on the ground that it would be placing too much power in their hands. Now the Government might have more confidence in them, and grant the extension on the terms desired. The genial opinion was that the fair should not be continued beyond Easter.
