WANGANUI.

A Well-bred Youngster—Bright Prospects for Wanganui Trotting Club’s Meeting—Zetes Establishes Six-fur-long Record for Stratford Course, (From Our Own Correspondent.) WANGANUI, Monday. J. Lambess has both Otahu and Sil ver Rose in steady work. The former looks fat, and it is evident the spell has done him good. He should be in good nick again by the time the Wanganui Autumn meeting comes round. Silver Rose is a mare that will not stand a lot of work, and hence she is not being asked to do much. Lambess has just taken Mallard (who was recently fired) upagain, and has an addition to his string in His Eminence, a four-year-old gelding and a very likely looking sort. W. H. Keith, formerly well known as an owner and trainer, and who took several horses to Australia at different times, including Omaha, Westerly and others, has a three-year old chestnut mare by Renown out of The Hempie in work. This filly shows a deal of quality, and such a well-bred youngster is likely to be given every

chance by Keith, who is one of the most capable trainers in the Dominion.

J. Boyd, who had St. Bill under his charge until recently, is getting a four-year-old mare by Lupin to

prepare for racing. If appearances go for anything, this mare should turn out to be something out of the ordinary, as she is very handsome looking and shows heaps of quality. Most of the Lupins can gallop, and this one shou'd prove no exception toithe ru’e.

Trotting enthusiasts on the Coast appear to b(e almost unanimous in the belief that the Wanganui Trotting Club’s Annual meeting, to be held on February 27 and March 2, will be a record success, given fine weather. It is the general view that the club has acted wisely in fixing the dates deciled upon, as there is sure to be a big crowd of visiting sportsmen here for the Wanganui Jockey Club’s Cup meeting, and the great majority will appreciate the opportunity of seeing some interesting trotting as well as two days’ galloping. The Trotting Club intends giving away £6OO in stake-money during the two days, the principal event being the Wanganui Cup of £l3O. Owners of trotters in other centres will doubtless support the club Wy nominating freely, and four days of excellent sport may be anticipa + ed. what with the trots and the gallops.

The Ngatarua gelding Zetes, trained Wy N. Gardner at Waverley, put up a record for the course when he won the Ngaere Handicap at Stratford, cutting out the six furlongs in 1.14 1-5. Gardner should win some good races with this gelding and Lord Lupin before the season ends. Roosevelt has not been worked since racing in the Manawatu Gup, in which event the son of Menschikoff went sore, so that it was no surprise to find his name missing from the Wellington Cup when the acceptances were made known to-night (Monday). Wanganui will not be so strongly represented as usual at the Foxton meeting this year. Albert Jackson has Coromandel in the Cup, Walter Rayner is taking Brunswick down for the four-furlong flutters, and Tilley has Mescal in the Herrington Welter. The latter has not done much lacing this season, but if anything like well should have a big chance in the event in question, in which he has Bst 611*.

Square Deal has been galloping very freely since the Marton meeting, where postillion’s brother won a double in fine style. He is engaged in the Ruapehu Handicap at Trentham, in which he has been given 8.0. On the form he showed at Marton, the son of Advance is sure to be well backed if he goes to the, post, and he will take a lot of beating, as he is one of the best hacks seen out for some time, and should hold his own in any company.
