HIS MAJESTY’S.
"THE BLUE BIRD.”
AN ARTISTIC TREAT
Maeterlinck’s charming phantasy “The Blue Bird” is still delighting good audiences at His Majesty’s Theatre, with its quaint imagery and exquisite conception. The adventures of Tyltyl and Mytyl in their search for “The Blue Bird” are keenly followed, and the lesson is brought home to everyone that happiness as signified by the Blue Bird is only to be found within ourselves. Little Gertie Cremer and Vera Spaull, in the leading roles, are two exceptionally gifted children, and showers of praise are bestowed on them for their delicate and intelligent interpretation. Mr. Maurice Dudley, as the dog, Mr. Ernest Laishley as the cat, Miss Irby Marshall as Night and -Mummy Tyl, Miss Nellie Calvin as Light and Miss Georgie O’Meara as the Fairy, handle their prominent parts with conspicuous skill, while the minor roles are likewise admirably filled, each performer thoroughly realising the value of his or her particular character towards conveying the necessary atmosphere of the piece. The many beautiful scenes —The Land of Memory, the Kingdom of the Future, the Forest, the Palace of Night, etc. —are a study in colouring and exquisiteness, and alone make the production an artistic treat. Mr. H. Lister Gilbert, the producer, is entitled to the highest praise for his achievement. A matinee was held on Saturday, when every child present received a blue bird brooch. “The Blue Bird” and Happiness will haunt His Majesty’s Theatre till Friday evening, when the season closes.
