CONSUMPTION OF STRONG LIQUORS NOT CAUSE OF CRIME.
in the course of an article on American crimes of violence, the Indianapolis “News” of August 20 says:—
“Nearly 30 persons a day are killed in the United States, including Alaska and the island dependencies. This is one of the statements made by the American Prison Association. In New York last month there was a killing a day. Last year there were 119. In the same time in London, with a population more than half again as large, there were only 19 murders. In Chicago in 1809 there were 118 homicides; 20 was the number for London, with a population four times as large“Nor is the excessive use of strongdrinks the primary cause. It is shown that not nearly so much strong drink is consumed in Chicago, St. Louis, and other American cities as in cities of similar size in England, such as Liverpool and Glasgow.”
